2nd Trimester

Cost of a 3D Ultrasound

I just scheduled my big u/s for early in August and found out that the clinic has 3D ultrasound capabilities. I would really like to have the 3D done but when I called my insurance company, they told me that they do not cover that type of ultrasound. DH and I are considering paying out-of-pocket to have it done, but we need to know what we could be looking at for cost. Has anyone else had to pay for this at a clinic?

Re: Cost of a 3D Ultrasound

  • They switched to 3D to give me a face picture, I assume at no extra cost to my insurance company. Also, she did the spine in 3d to check for abnormalities... but everything else was 2d.

  • I believe we were told that if we wanted to do one, it would be around $150 out of pocket.

  • Most insurance companies won't cover them because they're not medically necessary.  I'm having one done at the end of the month and I'm paying $200 for a 45 minute appointment.

Edit: the bump is being really slow on my computer and being stupid...

It would be the same price at my OB

  • even with insurance coverage, my 8wk 2D ultrasound is costing us a pretty penny.

you have no idea how much that frustrates me. :-/

  • I didn't know our hospital even had 3D available, but in the middle of the u/s the tech switched to 3/4D, it was amazing!  Plus we got about 3 photos in 3D and 3 in 2D.  The insurance statement showed it cost $158 for the u/s, and didn't make any mention of the 3D part.  As far as I know there was no out of pocket cost for us.

    This! EXACTLY this! :)

  • We are paying for one at the beginning of August and it is $150 and you get a 30 minute DVD, pictures, and some other stuff I can't remember right now. I have seen some cheaper than this and some that were more expensive. It all depends on where you go (my physicians office was going to charge me $200) and how long your session lasts.
  • Shop around, mine was only $85 for 20 minutes, a cd, and 4 pics. My ob was charging $150. It depends on where and what package u get.
