Parenting after a Loss

moms of babies with milk allergies....please help

hadley's stool test came back positive. i'm so upset that i've continued to eat things for 3-4 months now that have been hurting her after the first test was negative at 6 weeks.  i need to cut milk, soy, eggs and nuts out of my diet for 2 weeks to re-test her.

please help me (either by giving me a list of your daily food intake or websites that can help me know what to eat if i'm avoiding these things).  if no progress in 2 weeks, she is done BF, which i really want to try to avoid.

thanks for your help.

  • don't blame yourself, you didn't know she had the allergy. the test came back negative afterall! i would get a referral from the ped to a dietician. our gi specialist had one come meet with me immediately after that appt and she gave me hand outs on what to look for on labels, food ideas, etc. that's the easiest thing to do and then you have someone to contact if you need more information.

i'm surprised honestly that they would only give you 2wk. i was told it can take up to a month for the traces of milk protein, etc to leave your body and baby's body so technically even if you cut all those things out for 2wk she could still get a positive stool test.

and an fyi, oreos are milk free if you need a good sweet option Smile

  • I found https://www.godairyfree.org/ to be helpful.  I also was told that it could take a month for all traces of milk protein to leave my system.  Good luck!!
  • maybe i should call one of the lactation consultants today. the pedi gave me no real help other than to tell me to stop eating anything with milk, nuts, soy and eggs.
  • I knew a mom whose son was allergic to all of those things, plus a few more.  I'm pretty sure she used this website:

    https://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org/

I recognize some of the cookbooks they have listed on there, she had them at her house.

Good luck, it's not an easy diet to follow.  Homemade Rice Crispy Treats are ok to eat - I think the store bought ones are a no go though.

  • DD has a milk allergy but is on fomula so I am no help. But I just wanted to say don't beat yourself up...it is apparently very common and she could potentially grow out of it.  Hope all goes well on her next test!
  • DS has been using hypoallergic formula since he was three months old. I FF so I can't help you there, but I do wish that everything gets better for you and Hadley.

that might help. i'd definately look into meeting with a dietician though to take the guesswork out of all of it. its really hard to find foods that don't contain milk, let alone the others you listed so i think it would be the worth time to sit down and get some suggestions. also, DS outgrew his allergy within a 6wk time frame so don't be too discouraged by this! going dairy free for me meant dropping all of my pg weight and then some. i was way too small to be healthy so i talked to the ped about it. she had me trial eating normal for 2wk and then tested his stool again and it was normal!

  • I just wanted to say I'm sorry you are dealing with this..  Gosh.. you definitely deserve to catch a break after all you went through with your pg..and hadley being sick early on.. You poor thing.

  • I FF so I can't really answer your questions. But I just wanted to tell you that DD's stool test came back negative too when she was a few weeks old and I continued to give her dairy products (once she started solids) and tried repeatedly to wean her onto regular formula. We just found out NOW at 9 months via bloodtest that she has a moderate milk allergy. I also feel very guilty that I've been giving her foods that have been hurting her all this time. Hugs to you.
  • Hey girl - I don't have any advice, but wanted to say that just by looking at the websites people shared it looks like there is a lot of support out there to help you go dairy free.  You can do this!  (hugs)

That's a lot of food to cut out, but luckily it's for a limited amount of time and summer is good for finding lots of fresh produce so you can still have some variety. Do you like to cook/prepare meals? Cooking from scratch will probably be easier than trying to decipher long ingredient lists on food. It doesn't have to be complicated, either. I'd start with a list of things you can eat like: any vegetable, any fruit, any grain, any cereal, bread or pasta (with a short, safe ingredient list), any meat/fish, any type of bean/lentils, sweeteners like sugar/real maple syrup/honey, any type of oil (except nut) and then build meals around that. A farmer's market might be good inspiration if you have one nearby.I'm thinking of going dairy-free myself since my baby has pretty bad eczema and gets a rash after eating yogurt and cheese. It seems like half of my diet is dairy and eggs so I know it's not easy.
  • No advice as we went straight to Alimentum, but wanted to give you some virtual hugs. Trust me, I know the guilt of feeling like you've been harming your child with their diet. It sucks. :(

I have a friend whose baby has a milk/soy intolerance and has been successfully BFing for nearly 8 months. If you want me to put you two in touch, just shoot me an email, ok?

  • No advice, I just wanted to say I am so sorry you are dealing with this. ((hugs))
  • I know the guilt you feel. I felt so bad when we found out at 2 months. My pedi said it can take a while to present and 3 weeks or so to clear up. It's hard at first but you'll get the hang of it and it is so worth it to see you baby transform! I found a great cookbook on amazon

    The Milk/Soy Protein Intollerance Guidebook/Cookbook

Whole Foods is great and they have non dairy, non soy butter and choc chips which are actually pretty good. Rice milk is also not bad. I have lots of info I can email you and if you have a fax # I can fax you a list from Whole Foods of everything that is dairy free. I don't have a soy one but you can cross reference. FYI Oreos have soy :(

  • I had to do this with ds while I was eping.  I am not going to lie, it is very hard.  Mainly Whole Foods and Trader Joes were my shopping places.  Mainly Whole Foods, but its so expensive.  You have to read every label very carefully.  After a while you'll get the hang of it. Eating out or at someone else house is tricky.  Best kicker is we had no true evidence that ds had a milk allergy.  However now he is strickly on formula I am having some concerns that he does have some allergy as I am seeing some symptoms that I don't think are all reflux.  GL and lots of hugs.
  • So sorry to hear this May. I don't have any advice but just wanted to give you a {{hug}}.
