Babies: 0 - 3 Months

An update for anyone who is following my craptastic sleeper

So, it does sound like reflux.

Tried the oatmeal in the bottle on Thursday night and it.was.horrible!  He was up all night with gas.  Called the pedi and she wanted to see him on Friday.

His weight gain wasn't great.  She said he won't take his full stomach capacity in a feeding because it is painful somehow for him.

Basically she gave me the option of switching to a stronger medicine or trying the zantac again combined with a tiny bit of juice.  (I lowered his dosage because of constipation and I guess that dose didn't cut it).  If I put him on the stronger, she wanted me to have a Barium Xray done.  DH and I wanted to avoid this so I figured we'd try the zantac again.

I think it is making a little bit of a difference.  Matthew would only take 45 minute naps on.the.dot. in his crib.   Yesterday he took an hour nap, and a two hour nap, as well as some of those cat naps.  Right now he's working on an hour :)  This gives me a much happier baby during the day!

Still craptastic at night.  I'm hoping maybe it takes a little while for the full effects of the meds to kick in.  When he wakes in the middle of the night, or every hour for that matter, he wants to eat!!!  I wish they were good feedings though...he will only eat for about 5-7 minutes and then he's out like a light.  The pedi said this helps their throat feel better but I am afraid of creating bad habits.

So, in conclusion, my birthday is Friday and the only gift I want is for my baby to feel better!  I don't care if he doesn't sttn, I'd be happy to get up and feed him 2 or 3 times.  I just feel terrible when he is waking constantly and screaming like he is in pain.

  • It is so different if your LO is in pain than if your LO is just waking up and not being able to put themselves to sleep.  I hope your LO gets better and you get some sleep.  As for me, I'm pretty sure my LO is not in pain he is just being a pain in my butt and can't figure out how to put himself to sleep.  My DH will try to help but he only quits down when I hold him or feed him.  It sucks to be the only one to have boobs, hehe.  GL

  • i totally feel your pain on this one. DD doesnt nap (and i think its due to her reflux) she started not sleeping once we started the rice and seems to spit  up more (AND projectile more bottles than she used to) she was diagnosed with silent reflux and now its not so silent. zantac made her worse and are afraid if we ask to see a ped GI specialist, that DD will have to have a barium xray and i want to avoid that for her too (when i had mine a few years ago it was torture, i would NEVER want her to have to do that) we are at a loss of what to do, and all i want is for her to be happy and feel better.  i hope DS starts feeling better, i know how it is to have LO feel bad and as a mommy feel completely helpless as to how to make them feel better Sad

The barium x-ray/swallow study isn't too bad at all (well the one we had to diagnose J's reflux) and I'm glad we did it bc it was clear as day why he was screaming in pain. You could see the liquid jumping back up into his throat and that's when he'd start to fuss/cry. That said, if you don't feel comfortable with it, try to figure it out some other way!

SO glad he's napping better & I hope nights get better too!

I don't know if you'd be interested in trying this, but absolutely NOTHING worked for J's reflux (axid, zantac, prevacid, and prilosec all made little difference) but we started taking him to a chiropractor (several ppl I know have had success with their reflux babies doing this) and it was honestly like an overnight change. They don't hurt him at all, he smiles the whole time, and our insurance covers it 100%!

GL, I hope things start working for you!

this reminded me this AM about asking ped about this. nothing seems to help DD and i wonder if this will. where did you find research on this to help make your decision to take him to a chiropractor? i am starting to do this and cannot find any great resources.

I will do the Barium xray if things don't get better this week.  The pedi has already written up the script- she just said to call when I've had enough :)  Did Jax take the Barium okay?  How long did it take?  Can you tell me anything else about the procedure?  Do they let him drink it and then lay on a table or something?

Also, the chiropractor...did you say he will always have to go?  And what do they do there?

I asked my local baby board here on the Bump and they had success with it, as well as some of my IRL friends. I also asked for referrals to a good pedi chiro here on my local board. I told my pedi about it but they (typically) scoff at the thought of chiropractic, so he didn't have much to say about it.

is it scary, the adjustments for the babies? i mean the chiropractor isnt adjusting them like we would (the neck cracking etc?) i heard its more like massage etc. i am just really curious  b/c i am really starting to learn about alt. meds etc (since my mom got so sick, she has been seeing an MD that does both medicinal and alt medicine and seems to really help her)

Nothing seems to work for my little guy either--and he's gone from the 67% for weight to the 10th. I have had some success with a 1/4 teaspoon of Mylanta right before I feed him. He'll actually take more than an ounce if I do that--I got a full 5oz out of him last night! I'm not holding my breath that it's a magic bullet, but it's a big improvement!

  • Sounds silly, but do you let him sleep on his tummy?  Our pedi recommended this because of Lily's severe reflux.  Something about it being able to settle better and not come back up.

Just a thought.  I wish you all the best!!

3/22/09 - Lily Grace, born at 33 weeks, 2 days
    9/12/14 - M/C @ 7 weeks, 1 day (ectopic)

  • But does Jax have to go forever now?  I thought you said a while ago that it was a lifelong commitment?

NOOO not scary at all! She lays J down on the table thing and puts pressure on different points on his back, abdomen, neck and head. Like I said, he smiles & coos the whole time, absolutely no crying. There's no cracking or anything. She uses this little "thumper" tool that makes a loud noise, but she showed me how it works on my arm before doing it on J and it barely "thumps" them. Hard to explain, but it isn't traumatic at all, and I wish we'd done it WAY sooner than 3.5 months.

i am definitely going to look into this! thank you so much!!  and ill ask about the mylanta..i read about it but my ped never said it was an option.
