Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

anybody taking anti-depressants?

can you suggest a good one with minimal side effects?

Re: anybody taking anti-depressants?

  • My old ob put me on anti-depressants three days after I delivered Grace at 18 wks.  I had horrible effects from it and only took it for three days..  I dont believe I needed anti-depressants, I was just grieving..  I had full body tremors that made me feel like I was going to have a seizure...

I dont remember the name of the one I took, just wanted to share my experience...

  • I take one, however my suggestion is to try and see a psychiatrist rather than just a GP or an OB/GYN if you're going on antidepressants. I had to try out a few before I found one that worked for me and getting the right dose is a really tricky and important step. There is no "magic" AD for everyone, the specific one that works best for you depends quite a bit on specific symptoms, family history and other things.

oh please. not KU. effed up.
  • It really depends on how your body reacts tot the drug.  My brother and used to take the same one and he had side effects, I did not.  I am on zoloft now and it is really the only one that has ever worked for me.  I do have sexual side effects though.,
  • I am taking an antidepressant that is supposed to act as a sedative.  I take one 25mg pill once before bed time to help me sleep.  I don't really have any side effects.  When I first started taking it, almost 2 weeks ago I felt a little sadder but I think that has subsided.  I feel like it possibly makes me have to go to the bathroom more often as well.  It's called imipramine.

  • I agree with this. I've experienced bad side effects from some ADs that have worked very well for other people. I'd really see a psychiatrist--they are the experts on these types of meds.

I started taking Prozac (after a LOT of resistance on my part) a couple months after my second miscarriage.  In my case, it has made a world of difference.  I thought I was just grieving, but in hindsight I definitely had symptoms of depression.  I'm not sure if it was postpartum or otherwise, but I have noticed, and my husband and family especially have noticed a huge improvement.  I feel like I'm mostly back to my old self.  I still cry and mourn for Baby, but it doesn't get in the way of day to day life like it was.  I haven't noticed many side effects except for very slight restroom issues.

It's definitely worth it to discuss your options with a counselor/psychiatrist/OB/etc.  I had to be convinced by my husband, a coworker, and good friend who is an MD, and counselor to at least try medication.  Now I have to admit to them that they were right.

    Good luck.

  • I take citalopram, which I believe is generic for Celaxia (??).  I take this regularily, even before my M/C.  The only side effect I experience is sexual side affects.  I take this for anxiety and it helps me a lot.  I would see a psychiatrist becuase they might be able to help you without meds.
  • I'm on Zoloft. No bad side effects once you get used to it, but when i first started taking it & when i occasionally stop then start again i get negative side effects til i get "used" to it again, mostly bad headaches & nausea. Probably would help if I didn't STOP taking them & just stay on them instead of going off & on..
