Just curious if it can happen anytime, or if it's usually something they have from the beginning because E has started to get really fussy when eating. ?I know all the usual symptoms of reflux, and he has some of them (squirmy/arching while eating, fussier if he's flat, etc.) but not every time he eats. ?He's usually the worst during the last feeding of the night, and the rest of the time he gets fussy toward the end of the feeding, or just refuses to eat more than a couple ounces. ?He's formula fed now (since 1.5 months) and he's barely, if even, meeting his ounce requirement for a 24-hour period according to a lot of the charts. ?Any ideas? ?I'm sure I'll be calling the pedi about it soon if it continues or gets worse, but I know a lot of you have reflux experience, so I thought I'd ask here too.
Re: Too late for reflux to start?
Spencer just started showing signs of reflux recently and I really think it was because we decided we'd try out the cheap stuff (Costco brand formula). It did not jibe well with his body (when I'd put him down on the floor directly after eating--for playmat time--he'd FREAK out and scream like he was hurt) so the pedi put him on some xantac for babies and said to keep him propped up for about 30min-1hour after eating.
We've since stopped using the Costco stuff and are back to the good stuff and he seems to be a lot better. He's like your guy though where he'll eat just an ounce or two and be done or other times, he'll drink about 5 and spit some up.
Good luck.
Could his ears be bothering him? When I took K to the pedi last week she told me to keep an eye out for similar symptoms in case her cold developed into an ear infection.
I'm sorry your little one is experiencing discomfort--I hope this is something that can be easily remedied.
As for reflux, our first daughter had a pretty bad case of acid reflux and was on meds for almost nine months. Because of her tummy troubles, we've been especially alert to signs from DD#2. When we did not see the signs develop within the first couple of weeks we asked our pedi if this meant we could sigh a breath of relief. Unfortunately he said "NO" and that reflux can develop at any time. : (
Best of luck and I hope your son is feeling better soon. : )
When we saw the pedi GI doc last week, she told us that J's reflux should resolve itself around 3 months. I'm not sure if that means that someone could not develop the condition later. My understanding, though, is that infant reflux is caused by a weak muscle that takes time to develop and strengthen, so it doesn't really make sense that that problem would come up later. I hope your pedi has some good answers for you!
If it does turn out to be reflux, we should start a Bump Baby Reflux Support Group! It stinks!
Anyway..she did say that reflux can develop at any time. I would go in to see your pedi. It doesn't hurt to get him checked out.
