2nd Trimester

POLL: Finding out the sex

So my next U/S is July 29th. I will be 15w5 days. I've heard about people finding out the sex at 16w.

So my next U/S won't be for 4 more weeks after that so you KNOW I'm anxious!

Do you think there's a chance we'll get to find out the sex or do you thing we'll have to wait until the 19w u/s?

How far along were you when you found out?

THANKS!

Re: POLL: Finding out the sex

  • When I went for my last one they thought I was 18 weeks and would get to find out the sex. They were wrong.. I was only 15 weeks and 6 days.. and it was too small to tell. But everyone is different. So Good Luck!

  • They could make a guess, but the sex organs aren't fully developed yet.  Their guess could change at the 20 week u/s, so I wouldn't go buying any baby clothes.

We found out at 20 weeks.

  • We are Team Green... but I just had to say if you DO find out that early make sure you get a follow up...

It seems like there has been quite a few instances lately from girls in 3rd tri who found out at 16-18 wks... had their growth u/s at 36ish and it's NOT the sex they were told 20wks prior. Shocking!

It's still pretty early to tell... I just wouldn't go painting or buying anything pink or blue yet if you do.

  • We found out at 16 weeks we were having a boy and it was confirmed at our 20 week appointment:-)
  • Our doctors office doesn't actually do the U/S they go through the hospital rad. dept. so we had to schedule it and our doctor wouldn't prescribe until 19-21 weeks.
  • Good to know!!  Thanks ladies. I'll just plan to wait until my August u/s. Although it'll be tough cuz I wanna know so bad LOL

  • Team Green with Baby #1 and Team Green again with Baby #2

Sorry. I am of no help.

  • We're finding out at week 18 but you also have to remember the baby may not cooperate so there's always a chance you won't find out at that appointment. My insurance only pays for 1 ultrasound so I may be screwed...lol.?
  • When I was 16 weeks exactly, they told me they were pretty sure it was a boy, but not to "buy anything" yet. At 20w2d they confirmed that I am indeed having a little boy-o.
  • We did the Jack or Jill DNA test at 11 weeks. They say it's 98% accurate but they still invite you back for an ultrasound to confirm. We're going on the 21st. It's a girl!

  • We had an u/s at 17 weeks and they tried really hard to find out the sex, but were unable to.  I had to wait until my 20 wk u/s to find out and they still had a hard time.
  • I had to have an u/s at almost 16 weeks (15 wks, 4 days- I think) and at first the tech said that there would be no way she would be able tell us that early... but at the end she told us that she was 100% certain that it was a boy. I guess she just didn't want us to get our hopes up- and I also think it's easier to tell that early when it's a boy.

OH- and I should add that they confirmed the sex again at our 18 wk appt... still a boy!

  • Boys are easier to tell than girls at that point.  The clitoris is not completely hidden within the labia and the protrusion can be confusing or result inconclusive determination.  If they say boy, from my anecdotal experience with friends you can be fairly sure (but not 100%) that it is a boy, but I wouldn't buy out BRU or spread the word or anything at that point.

  • We found out at 17 weeks 4 days, confirmed at 20w3d. Both times it was very obvious. Just make sure you can see either a definite penis or a definite 3 lines- otherwise, don't count on it to be accurate.

  • They may make a guess! My friend found out she was having a little boy when she was 16 weeks then it was confirmed at 20.. So maybe?! We found out at 18 weeks that we were having a boy!!  Hope this helps!!! Good luck!
  • You can absolutely find out by 16 weeks! Some OB's regularly do their gender determination at 16 and then re-confirm at 20. All of this is pending baby's cooperation. And "technically speaking" you can tell as early as 12 weeks, yes 12 weeks with an experienced tech.

Personally we found out at 16 weeks and the tech told us they wouldn't tell us if they weren't sure. If you've ever studied ultrasound pics (like we did for Labor & Delivery in nursing school) it is very easy to tell at 16 weeks whether there is a penis or nothing! Trust me if baby gives the right shot, you'll know! Emphasis on a "good shot" :)
