Freaking out! Anyone who had/has GD please help

Did anyone here have or currently have GD? I technically passed the GTT with passing scores on 3/4 blood draws, but it was close. I was worried about it, so I bought a glucose monitor from wal-mart just to test on my own. Probably not wise, but I am neurotic like that..

So, I ate my usual caro-load breakfast of a bowl of cereal with milk and tested at the 1 hour and 2 hour marks. I got a freakin' 170 at one hour and a 140 at 2 hours!! I'm FREAKING out now. I am calling my OB immediately tomorrow and insisting they see me. I feel like I should have been diagnosed or at the very least referred to a dietician for help with my diet after they saw my GTT scores. Can any of you with experience comment on this?

  • I did pass the 3 hour test, but at a routine checkup with my endocrinologist for my thyroid, she decided to check my sugar "just for fun."  It was 190 well after an hour had passed since I ate.  Obviously she made me tell my OB or she would "rat me out."  LOL.  So next day I saw my OB and she checked my sugar and diagnosed me w/ GD.  This was a week before Thanksgiving.  I was not pleased... I'm one of those people that would skip all the real food and go straight for dessert.  Anyway, my OB had me read the South Beach Diet book and follow phase 2 of that diet.  Not the strict phase.  She also set me up with the diabetes clinic at Kennestone, but honestly, I had much better success by following what I learned in the South Beach book.  I was totally able to control my sugar with diet- no problems.  In fact, I still try to follow that diet as much as possible- it really is a healthier way to eat.  Don't cut carbs completely- baby needs them, but avoid all the processed stuff and stick to whole grains.  Basically, you need to eat 6 small meals a day- breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack.  Snacks were hardest for me so I ate a ton of triscuits and peanut butter and granola bars.  If you're really concerned, just mention it at your next appointment and see what your Dr reccomends.  Oh and try the Breyers Carb Smart ice cream if you need something sweet.  The chocolate kind tastes better than the real stuff!

  • GD is definitely manageable. If you are concern, have your doctor schedule you for a nutrition class at Northside. The key is keeping your body fuel and managing your carbs. Certain grams of carb is allowed per meal. Your dietician will develop a meal plan for you. Good luck! It was a blessing in disguise for me to have a GD. I wasn't watching out what I eat the first part of my pregnancy. So glad that I went on a nutrious diet coz at least the weight gain was at a healthy level.?

  • Oh and one more thing... in the hospital, after you have the baby, they will make you eat the nasty diabetes food until your readings return to normal.  I was getting concerned b/c I was still having high readings 4 days after he was born.  Finally, one of the Dr's in my practice noticed that the nurse kept bringing me cran-grape juice.  I mean, like 8 a day!  I thought I was supposed to be drinking them since she kept bringing them- you know to prevent a UTI or something.  Ummm those are NOT sugar free.  As soon as I quit drinking those things my sugar returned to normal :-)  Really, do not stress over it even if you do have GD- it is easily managed and not that big of a deal IMO.

  • I really don't think you have anything to worry about.  Those seem like normal glucose for anyone 1-2 hours after eating carbs.  If you are not diagnosed with GD and your OB did not tell you to check, I don't think you need to be checking your glucose.  You are just going to worry yourself for no reason.  Everyone's glucose is going to be elevated after eating carbs whether you are diabetic or not.  I "barely" passed the first GD test but my OB said you either pass or you don't.  No matter how close you are to passing you still pass.

I agree with this. If you are truly worried you should call the dr but I think you need to back away from the glucose monitor. The worst thing you can do is cause yourself unnecessary stress which in turn isn't good for the baby. If you passed you passed, they wouldn't mess around with that if you didn't.

  • Thanks everyone. I feel much better after reading these. Sometimes, I just need somebody to tell me to chill out and quit obsessing. I knew it was probably stupid to check my sugar on my own, but that's just the mentality that I have. Thanks for knocking a little sense in to me. Will call, but will def. leave it alone if dr. says not to worry again...
