anyone making their own babyfood?

I know its a ways off, but I like to be prepared.

How do you go about it? Do you need a special food processor or can you just use that setting on the blender?

I read in american baby that you can just blend veggies or fruit and store them in ice trays. Warm up two for a serving. Sounded like a good idea. Anyone have other tips?

I plan on it! There is an appliance you can buy, I THINK from Williams Sonoma...I'll try to find it. I know there are books about it too.

You don't need this, obviously, but I think it will make it a lot easier

  • My mom did for all 10 of us so I plan to. She got me a baby food grinder and some ice cube trays and storage units. I know I will at least make their fruits and veggies.
  • Heck yeah! I am total food nerd and am excited to blend and mash fruits and veggies.

Haven't researched it yet but I am sure once - fingers crossed - I am on 0-6 someone will have tips.

  • Thanks! i will have to look into that
  • I'm going to! We already have a blender/processor that I'll use, but I still want to get some covered ice trays. I've seen reccommendations for wholesomebabyfood.com a lot on here while I've been researching it.

  • Heck yeah! I'm sooooo excited about it too! Yep ... quite a ways off for me but I can't wait to try the williams-sonoma contraption! Yep ... I know you can simply use any food processor but I can't help myself :D
  • yes, i plan to! my mom did it for me and besides being healthier, i think it would be a lot tasteier! i have a small food processor ill use.
  • I made all of Luke's baby food and I will this time too.  You don't need any of the special baby food appliances.  I bought a food steamer from Kohls when it was on sale ($30) to cook the foods (apples, peaches, sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, etc) and some foods I boiled (peas, green beans), then I put them in the blender with water, and done.  I did the ice cube trays to freeze everything, then I had the "snack size" ziplocks I'd put 3 of a kind in, then I'd put all of the little ziplocks into a big Ziplock Freezer Gallon bag and date/label it. I did this cause they can stick together and it is a pain to try and break the cubes apart.  Some foods don't do well in a blender.....DON"T do regular potatoes, too march starch.  I almost burnt out the blender motor trying.  So some things I just waited til he was old enough to have small chunks and I mashed those up with a fork.  I used water instead of BM.  I didn't have enough extra BM to put into food, and water worked just fine.  I never bought any of the special baby books.  Its really easy.  I'd buy a ton of stuff at the grocery store, and spend 1 entire day making food, then I'd be set for the month.
  • i've heard a immersion blender can be really helpful too.

this blog has lots of good ideas:

  • I plan on getting a blender or food processor, and store them in covered ice trays. I am SO excited!!
  • Uh oh, I just watched the video for the W-S appliance and I think I'm in love! Yep, I think I need to get that! Embarrassed
  • Well I'm the type of person who can get really excited about an idea and then i'll get tired after a week. I think i'll give this a try but I dont know how long it'll stick. But it's definitely something i'll look into!

This was what I was going to suggest. I figure it will be easy and I'll probably eat some of it too with baby!

  • They sell the baby food maker at Bed Bath and Beyond. With a 20% coupon it's not a bad price at all!
  • I am planning to do some! I haven't bought one yet but I saw a food mill at Target in the baby section for $19.99...I think that was the price!
  • I'm excited about it and really want to stick with it.
  • With DD I used our regular blender for fruits and veggies but got a food proccessor when we started meats and chicken.  I also used ice cube trays.  It really does make portons and defrosting very easy.  When we cooked the meat (steak, pork, ect..) and the chicken I would just keep it all very bland and not add any spices and bake it or cook it in a pan.  As long as you cook it to well done it works out great.

  • I did with my ds and plan to this time around too. It honestly took very little time and it definitely does taste 100% better. The only time he had jarred food was when we stayed oot at the il's and the couple tastes I had were gross compared to what he had been eating. His poop smelled AWFUL that week too. It was not fun.

www.wholesomebabyfood.com has everything you could ever want to know about making baby food (recommended months to introduce, preperation tips, how long it will keep in a freezer, etc) and with no need to buy a book. It's really very simple. All I had is one of those mini food processors and I froze the purees in ice cube trays. Once they were frozen I moved them to freezer ziplocks and labled them. Most of the cooking was hands off, so I would spend maybe 5-10 minutes tops pureeing the batch and would wind up with enough cubes for weeks. It honestly wasn't much extra work for me at all!

  • im going to also... i did it when i was a nanny, u dont need any special appliances but in my opinion the stick blender/food processor worked best. u can blend the food while its still in the pot. also u will want to steam as much as possible, it keeps most of the nutrients in the food. i have a GREAT book its called top 100 baby purees the food was really good

Major Yes to this site.  I referenced it all the time when I was making DD's food.
