What is your opinion on offering water and when to offer water/juice to an 8 month old baby?? ds only gets his bottles of milk (formula) throughout the day, breastfed for night feedings, and given 2 meals of pureed veggies/fruits/mixed grains. and then puffs for snacks. I do not typically offer him any water during his meals but sometimes I put water in a sippy cup just to see what he does with it. (he doesnt do much, just bites the nipple). I am asking b/c ds gets constipated very easily and we have been giving him prunes/prune juice every couple of days and then if that doesnt work, karo syrup. I try to avoid any foods that would constipate him. I think it is the formula b/c when he was being exclusively breastfed, this didnt happen. or it could be the introduction of food. whatever the reason, I think that a little water throughout the day might help. What do u think???
Re: Water for 8 month old??
I do the sippy cup as well. My son suffers from constipation so the doc told us to offer him a lot of water and it does help.
i give abby water, especially since it's been so hot out. i kinda just give her the sippy cup to play with and she gets most of it down her shirt, but she'll drinkn maybe an ounce. i hate that my mom is always trying to force me to give her water all the time ("but she's soooo thirsty!!" no. she's not. she's cranky. it's different.) But if we go to the mall or we've been outisde for awhile, i give her water in the sippy cup. (i don't ever put water in the bottle... she HATES it)
Our pedi told us give DS 2 oz of pear juice on a daily basis and we found that that helped with constipation when we first introduced foods. We mixed it in with his morning cereal, so we didn't actually give him straight juice to drink. We did provide water in a sippy cup, and I found that when he was first learning how to use one a spout that allowed for an easier flow actually helped him to get the idea better. For water and other non-sticky liquids, I'd recommend the Take-and-Toss sippy cups since they let the baby get a drink with less effort.
Now that he can talk a bit, he asks for "agua" almost constantly and drinks A LOT.

I give Spencer a sippy cup with water in it; he also just basically bites the nipple. He drinks maybe an oz or so of it. He too had constipation issues. We used to give him 1 part prune juice and 2 parts water mixture once a day. then the pedi suggested just putting an oz of prune juice in his first morning bottle. worked like a charm for the whole day!
once he started eating foods we made sure to give him non-binding foods, and when he does get a binding food (rice, bananas) he'll have something non-binding with it.
b/c it is so hot out I have been giving him a little water to make sure he stays hydrated, but I want him to get used to the sippy cup so I'm helping him drink out of that.

Txs for all ur words of advice. I think Im going to try that prune juice in am's bottle and offering sippy with h20 with solids. I have the born free sippy cups but Ill definitely check out the ones recommended on here to see if they would be better. I want to avoid giving him karo syrup. Its soooooo super duper sugary!
btw, i use the Gerber Nuk sippy cups. They're awesome! the spout is really soft! also, the handle is removeable and you can fit any of their bottles into it!
To teach him how to use a cup early, I started giving Nicky a sippy of water every time he was in a reclined position like the swing or carrier when he was 4.5 months old. At that age, he maybe drank a total of one oz out of it per day. He was more interested in chewing on the spout.
When he was 6 months old, I began putting the cup of water on his highchair tray during every meal and showing him how to take sips in between bites. By about 6.5 or 7 months old, he was picking it up himself and drinking out of it inbetween bites on a regular basis. He probably drank a total of 6-8 oz a day.
Progressively as he got older he would drink more water at each meal and I also began bringing his cup with us when we went out because it was so hot outside.
I introduced juice around 6 months old. To this day I water it down to mostly water, with just a splash of juice for flavor because Nicky gets diarrhea when he drinks straight juice.
Nadia gets a water in her sippy with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not sure how much she really drinks vs. how much she spills on her clothes and spits out. LOL! I also travel with a sippy cup of water in my diaper bag while we are out and about since it's so hot. I use the born free one because it has a lid- great for the diaper bag. I also use the munchkin with the soft spout.
I use bottle water for her.
