pack n' play or bassinet

My boyfriend and I are getting ready to do our shower registry online at bru and trying to decide between a pack n play or bassinet. I was set on the pack n' play but then after reading the reviews found that a lot of them sag in the middle which makes me think twice. Now I'm just considering a bassinet for under $100. I heard that the sagging in the pack n play could contribute to sids. Has anyone else heard of this?

What does everyone use as an infant sleeper? Any suggestions?

Re: pack n' play or bassinet

  • i loved our PNP.  when i was on materntiy leave, i used it all day long to change DD and for her to nap.  i never walked all the way upstairs.  so i think it was worth it.  it sagged a tiny bit, but nothing big.

we used a bassiet in our room and DD hated it. we got it from a friend.  she only slept in it maybe a week...i'm glad we didn't buy one.  i would suggest maybe getting something second hand if you think you might not use it that much.  good luck!

PNP! You can use it for a lot longer than a bassinet. DD loves hers and we use it whenever we go out of town b/c dd doesn't sleep in the bed with us.

  • My DS sleeps in his pack n play every night.  We have the Chicco Playyard and have not have a problem with it yet.  PLus when we go away we take it down and it goes with us.  Easy!

  • DD has slept in the pack n play since day one. We got one of the graco PNPs that have the newborn napper on it - it was fantastic until she outgrew it! No sagging problems here, although when she shifts you can really hear her movement!
  • PNP! We love ours! It sags slightly, but we still let DD sleep in it without fear.

  • I've never heard of this... but if I were you I'd register for both. We have the PNP in the living room and he naps there occasionally. The bassinet is next to my bed in our bedroom, and that's where DS sleeps through the night.

  • We had an Eddie Bauer bassinet, which was great for the 2 months we used it. We LOVE our PNP and use it for naptime downstairs twice a day, every day. The changing station is awesome, too! When the PNP bassinet sagged in the middle, around a month ago, we just switched her to the bottom part.
  • I'd go with the PNP, since you can use it longer. We had access to both, and she outgrew the bassinet at 3 months. She's still using the PNP.
  • PnP...i have used the heck out of this thing...in the beginning dd slept in the bassinet/changing table part...now we use it everyday for playtime!  it was the best $99 i ever registered for!!

  • I think it depends a bit on your home and your sleeping style. I totally agree with PP if you have a big home with multiple floors - you'll get a lot of use out of a PnP. But, if your home is smaller, you might not use it as much. We have never actually used our PnP. I had planned to use it as a bassinette when DD was little, but it was too big to fit on our bedroom. Plus, our condo is small and one floor, so we don't need a second sleeping area for her.  Personally, I could not live without our cosleeper - it's a little bed that attaches to our bed so DD is right next to me at night, but on her own bed. She still nurses a couple of times a night, and with the cosleeper, I don't even need to sit up - I just pull her onto the bed next to me, nurse her, and put her back. If you're planning on nursing and/or cosleeping at all, I'd recommend you look into it.
