If your DH works nights...?

How do you keep your DC entertained so that your DH can sleep during the day?  DH just got a new job that he'll be working 3rd shift for at least a few weeks to train with someone.  He was told he will move to 1st shift eventually, since that was his preference.  I'm just not looking forward to trying to keep DS entertained and somewhat quiet while DH is sleeping (probably 9am-5pm.)  I'm going to try to take him out somewhere until lunchtime but am fearing a rainy day at home, lol!  We live an apartment btw, so unfortunately there is no section of the our place that's far enough away from the bedroom.  thanks for any ideas/tips!

Re: If your DH works nights...?

  • How about the baby crack machine that is stored away? Except this time for DH? When I was up all night with the kids, DH would let me take a nap and I put on music to drown it all out.

  • I work nights (3 a week).  DH is home for the summer with DS.  I keep a fan going to drown out sound.  DH keeps DS downstairs.  They play, go walk around the mall, take walks, visit friends.  I sleep from 8:30-3.  Just enough sleep to get by.  During the school year, FIL watches DS and they just play outside, take walks to the park, and eat!  It hasn't been an issue except when DS would cry with his naps and I would be able to hear him.
  • I was also going to suggest white noise. I mean, K's not super quiet during the day, but I don't think he's loud enough that he'd keep anyone awake if they were sleeping in the room with white noise on.
  • earplugs for dh, seriously.

I mentioned it and he said no way, lol!  If its warm enough we'll try the window fan, if not...idk yet.  DS will knock on the door in the morning and yell "dadaaaa!" until he wakes up, should be fun :)

  • days dh has to sleep he usually turns on his radio and often the fan, even in cold weather.  i make sure the bedroom door is closed and try to keep us at the other end of the apt (we have a small apt too.)  i try to get out as much as i can.  some days it goes better than others.  it helps that dh sleeps like the dead!  good luck!  i hope he gets to switch shifts soon!
