Babies: 0 - 3 Months

My LO has been Mt. Vesuvius today-worried

My baby has spit up/vomited twice today and we aren't talking about a little spit up, we're talking the full contents of his stomach. I'm trying to not be a hysterical new mommy but I'm worried. Before today he'd rarely spit up and if he did it was minute amounts.

  • Is he burping??

DS did this before we got him medicine for reflux. I would call the pedi on Monday morning. Try not to worry, though I know it's hard. ?

max's reflux didn't really show up til 3-4 weeks. If you're concerned call pedi

  • We have our first pedi appt on Monday so of course I'll be sure to bring it up. I was just wondering if anyone had any insight.

He does, though not a lot.

  • Hey Chrys!  Our ped advised us to keep her upright for 30 minutes whenever she's fed and to keep her elevated at an angle whenever we lay her down.  We hadn't had it happen for a few weeks until yesterday.  I think it was because we were lazy about burping though.

  • Hmmm I guess this means we might not have any more side lying night feedings. :( It was working so well for us.

reflux sucks I know. But it is treatable and it does get better. Hang in there.

Night time is the only time we aren't diligent about my previous posted advice (we're cosleeping too).  Try it during the day and keep doing what you've been doing at night.  Burp first thing in the morning. Good Luck!

  • We were diagnosed as having reflux but she DIDN'T EVER HAVE IT. Thankfully I tried an experiment about a month ago and cut all raw dairy from my diet. Voila! Now very little spit-up, fussing, etc. I'm so mad that we gave her zantac for so long- peds are so quick to suggest meds instead of looking for the actual problem. She used to spit up as you are describing- tons of milk and sometimes it was curdled and nasty, too.?
  • Spitting up does not mean GERD. A lot of babies have reflux to some extent because their little disgestive tracts don't work properly and the flap that closes between the esophagus and the stomach doesn't "fit" for a few months. GERD is diagnosed when it causes other problems such as poor weight gain, fussiness, food refusal, and breathing problems.

If you're worried, talk to your pedi, but if your LO otherwise seems fine, it's probably just a classic case of baby spit up.
