3rd Trimester

You may hate me but I was told to gain weight.

I've been hesitant to post this because most ladies complain of gaining too much weight, but I no longer care if I get flamed.  Here's my story:

I lost weight in the 1st tri because of my ms.  2nd tri I started to gain weight, and up to now I have gained 9 lbs.  All along my MW has been congratulating me on not gaining much.  It isn't for lack of eating either- as soon as I could eat again I began to stuff my face!

Now, for the past 3 weeks I haven't gained any weight at all.  My MW is now concerned and has told me to eat more snacks.  I eat until I'm full, and eat several times a day so now I'm trying to stuff myself, which is uncomfortable because I generally always feel full now.

I'm concerned because I'm measuring 2 weeks behind now and MW said he's a little guy.  I know that he's also dropped a bit.  She said that at my next appointment we might do an u/s to measure how big he is.  If he's under the 10th percentile he has to come out.  This makes no sense to me.  Shouldn't he stay in as long as possible and get as much as he can?  He might just be a little baby- I'm small and I was born 2 weeks late and was only 5lbs something.

I've been trying to not worry too much but I feel like I'm a bad mom already.  I've been told all along he's healthy and I've been asking if my low weight gain is anything to be concerned about (I really have asked this ? at each of my appointments) and have been told not to worry.  I feel like I'm failing already.

  • I don't hate you.  Take care of yourself!

  • I'd just keep doing what you're doing until they tell you otherwise. Over-eating (as in once you're already full, you keep going) is probably just going to stress your body, I would've thought, and if you were small as a baby, maybe small babies just run in the family. Don't stress about it - you're doing the best you can. Hope everything turns out well for you and your LO.
  • Has she suggested eating some high fat snacks, so you're getting the calories without stuffing yourself silly? Like protein bars or something maybe...

  • they say some babies can put on more weight on the outside then in the womb, especially towards the end. so i can inderstand getting him out to pack on the weight. Whatever is the best for baby go with it.
  • My sister had some terrible health issues during her 2nd pregnancy and had only gained 2 lbs by 7 months.  She looked so sick, but it was clear that her body was taking from her and moving everything over to the baby.

As sick as she was, she still had a 7lb baby who is perfectly healthy.  I think that your body will know what needs to be done to make sure that your LO is getting what he needs.

Just keep your eating up!  I hope that you get good news at your appt!

  • Take care of yourself! I hope you and your little man are okay.

(I only hate you a teensy bit! Wink

  • I had two no weigth gain weeks at 36/37 and only gained a pound between 37 and 38. Then between 38 and 39 I gained four. I think that stalls and catch-ups are pretty normal. As long as you are getting enough calcium I wouldn't worry too much. Good luck.

  • i hate you just a little bit...lol. Stick out tongue (im up +42lbs)

but seriously, sometimes if there are problems with iugr or other things like that then they may have to take the baby early b/c it would be better for him outside than in...but if you were 2w late and were only 5lbs, maybe the gals in your fam just have little babies?!?! dont get upset till you get that growth u/s...hang in there :)

  • Try drinking Ensure with 2 meals a day. Put it in the freezer and it tastes like a milkshake. I was told to gain weight and did-22 pounds! Good luck :)
  • I wasn't ever told to try to gain more weight, but I haven't gained a whole heck of a lot weight and it's been sporadic.

My kiddo is also measuring small (and my fundus height reflects that). At 36 weeks s/he was in the 18th percentile. At 39 weeks s/he had gotten up to 22nd percentile. If kiddo had been smaller than 18, we would have had the kid out by now. As it is, the doctor is still wanting the kid by or before my due date, so I'm being induced tomorrow.

Like someone posted above, doctor thinks that the kiddo is fully developed and will do good on the outside and will hopefully grow better on the outside than on the inside.

  • My OB wants me to gain weight to help my LO get as big as he can before he comes (since he probably will be early).

I drink 2 chocolate protein Boosts per day....I love them.  There is like 15 grams of protein in each one.  They help you gain steady weight without stuffing your face with doughnuts and bad stuff.

At 36 weeks I have gained like 12 pounds (and 5 of those have been in the last 3 weeks with the help of the Boost drinks).

  • Good suggestions with the Ensure and Boost!  That sounds better to me than lots of mac and cheese and the like!
  • Does the 9lbs include the weight you lost in 1st tri and then put back on or is it 9lbs from your pre-pregnancy weight?

I agree with pp that stuffing yourself silly may not be the best thing. I would eat higher calorie foods.

It's 9 lbs from my pre-pg weight.  Including the weight I lost it would be 12 lbs.
