We've been fighting the evil mega-developer from hell for over 2 years now - trying to save our little restaurant. (They bought the property and want to develop it which is fine except they want to break our lease which we have for another seven years and this is there 5th time trying to break it.) We got a call Wednesday afternoon from our lawyer that the other side canceled mediation and we are going to trial. This is hitting us from out of the blue.
Both lawyers wanted to try mediation but mega-developer would only go if we went to the person they wanted who charges $4000 a day. We pay half. Then we pay over $200 an hour for our lawyer. We finally agree even though this is going to kill us and they say "never mind - no mediation". I hate it when we get sucked in to their ploys! Now we have a week and a half to prep for trial and they've most likely been prepping all along.
I could scream. I'm so frustrated and the economy is SO bad. Our little tourist town is more like a ghost town. Everyone is down about 30% from last year and last year was bad.
We went over worst case scenarios and such this morning. I am trying really hard not to take this out on anyone but really what I want to do is kick something and scream IT IS SOOOOO NOT FAIR!!! What they are doing is illegal and we finally filed a counter suit but in the mean time the plan seems to be to run us in to the ground with legal fees. They are big they have deep pockets - in that way they will win. How do you fight someone like that?
Ugh. I hate bullies. I hate that these big corporations think they can do what ever they want. I hate people who think because they have money they are above the law and, most of all, I hate liars.
OK - Tantrum over. Thanks for letting me vent.
Re: So we're going to trial... (Vent)
Wow, I'm sorry. That's alot of crap to deal with at a time that is financially and emotionally exhausting. I hope for the best for you guys!
P.S. Hubby and I love supporting local business--especially when eating out! I'd like to try your place but we're in Nebraska so that makes it a little tough to come for dinner...
ugh!!! I love little restaurants. If i lived out there I'd totally eat at your rest!!
Good luck!
Go ahead and vent. I for one am not a fan of huge coroporations/delevopers. I used to work for a local outdoor store/SCUBA shop, and a local restraunt. Obviously I wasnt the owner, but saw what they went through when big box stores moved in.
Do you take mail orders for food?
