If you delivered at Saddleback Women's Hospital...

...what were the accommodations like for your DH/partner in the postpartum room? I just took my hospital tour and there were no open postpartum rooms for them to show us. I'd heard that they only have chairs that don't fully recline.

Anyone know if they have cots you can request or if they allow you to bring in a small (twin) air mattress or something?

I have to have a repeat c/s so we'll be staying for 4 nights. With DS#1 I delivered at Cedars in LA and DH slept on a cot.

Just curious. TIA!

Re: If you delivered at Saddleback Women's Hospital...

  • I'm pretty sure that the chair reclined all the way flat.  DH says they weren't too bad, but he's not super picky.  There really isn't room for an air mattress in the rooms on the downstairs floor, though.  I would for sure bring some blankets, though.  There seems to be a huge discrepancy in temperature from room to room - ours was cold and we were freezing at night, but people next to us were sweating.

  • I totally agree with the temp! They have one thermostat per 3 rooms...not good for PP women with ragin hormones! As far as the chair goes for DH, I believe it reclined mostly flat, if not all the way. I had a C section too so we were there for 4 nights as well. Definitely NO room for any air mattress in the downstairs room...barely enough room for more then 1 visitor, but I guess its better then sharing a room!
  • Are you referring to Saddleback Memorial?  I had my son there 6 years ago and they had Labor, delivery, recovery and post partum all in one room.  They were really nice and all the medical equipment was stowed away until needed.  They had pretty decent sized rooms compared to other hospitals I have visited friends at. (Kaiser & St Joes)  They had a bay type window with a huge cushion on it that wouldn't be a good place to sleep.

Has it changed that much in six years??  It sounds like you are talking about a different place.

  • I am talking about Saddleback Laguna Hills...and the labor and delivery rooms on the 2nd floor are very spacious and you most likely will stay there the first night, but then they move you to the post partum rooms on the 1st floor and they are very small.

  • I just delivered there a month ago and the labor/deliver rooms were great.  Big with bay windows and a little fridge, tv's and dvd player in the rooms.  As soon as you have that baby they will move you to the 1st floor PP room and that is much smaller.  Very tight squeeze so you will not be able to put a cot there.  Your bed is more comfortable than in Labor/Delivery but the pull out is not.  My husband stayed the first night and then I sent him home after that.  It wasn't worth him not sleeping well when we live so close.  Good luck and let me know if you have other questions.

I'm referring to Saddleback Laguna Hills. I saw the L&D rooms on the tour and they are huge and nice with a big bay window and a fully reclining chair for your partner... However, since I am having a c-section I will never actually see the inside of one of those rooms again -- I'll have DS in the OR and then be transferred to the postpartum rooms on the 1st floor. I've heard from several people including those kind enough to reply here that they are basically the size of a closet - yikes! Oh well, as pp said at least they are better than sharing a room.

I'm sure we'll both be too exhausted/thrilled with our new addition to care. Thanks for the replies!

Yeah.  You only get to stay in those rooms if they don't have someone coming behind you.  I have to say that, even though the space issue sucked, the nurses are WAY nicer on the lower floor.  Our nurse was Dawn and she was seriously so sweet.  We keep running into her places and she always asks how DS is doing.

  • THAT STINKS!!!  Six years ago when I had my son they did not move you.  I stayed in that nice big room 3 nights.  They must have changed it or maybe they weren't busy in July 2003??

I am hoping to deliver at a free standing birth center... Beach Cities Midwifery which in only a few blocks from SMMC.  My asthma has been acting up real bad so my pulmonoligist wants me to deliver in the hospital.  It is kind of a wait and see how it goes game right now.  I just don't want to wait until the last minute to get acquainted with an OB.  I ended up having my son there because I came down with pneumonia at 32 weeks.

Anyway I live in Costa Mesa and I am considering Hoag because it is so close. I don't know about driving down the 405 in labor.  What if I need to go at 500 pm on a friday?  YIKES!  Can anyone say car birth?

  • yes! downstairs room is small, unless you get the end rooms for twins... I has c/s too and postpartum was full so I got to spend the extra day upstairs and got moved into the twins room... which was at least 2times bigger then the regular room that we saw at the tour... DH had no problem sleeping in the fully reclining chair... he like the total darkness to sleep so he brought a eye cover and that did the trick.... also for the temperature it was bit tricky but you can control the temperature in the room... or at least in twin room it was...

but over all everyone is super nice especially nurse Christine McCoy
