TTC after 35

Listen to your Doc not the nurse

I posted a while back about how my nurse called me right after IUI #2 (before I got any results) and told me the doctor said we could move on to IVF. I was extremely upset about it.

Well, for over a month now I have been thinking we have to do IVF, I bought books, cried over how we are going to come up with the money (no ins coverage for that), researched it like crazy, told my Mom about it, ect. Then we finally got in to talk to the Re and he tells me he wants us to try IUI one or two more times first and this time they will increase the dosage of the injectables!

I am now even madder at that stupid nurse, she never explained anything, even when asked and apparently her take on our problems is more severe than what the doctor thinks. I think I will go with the doctor since she is only in her 20's. So annoyed but so relieved we don't have to do IVF yet. My Dh said I should always go with what the doctor says not the nurse. I am sure there are nurses that are well qualified but in our case the doctor has much more experience and training. Just thought I would pass it along.

I am glad that you don't have to go that route yet!

Hearing it is time for IVF can be quite jarring, I am sure that stressful miscommunication has taken a toll on you!

GL!  I hope the increased meds are the ticket!

  • I would always listen to the doctor over the nurse for sure.

And that nurse needs a good duff in the ass.

  • So, the nurse just took it upon herself to review your files, call you in the middle of the treatment cycle and recommend alternative treatment??

And your sure she meant to call you and not another patient?  Did you take this up with her or the RE at the appointment?

That seems so highly inappropriate!  So sorry you had to deal with this!

  • I'm sorry you had to go through that unnecessary stress.  It's stressful enough!  I hope the increased meds bring you your BFP!
  • The nurse didnt explain to me that the doctor wanted us to do more iui's. She only said he was ok with us going on to ivf.  I switched nurses.

    Thanks for your well wishes!

  • A nurse on a power trip...sounds like bad news to me...

Good luck with yout next IUI!

  • This is just something to think about. Nurses usually wouldn't take it upon themselves to call you with that kind of statement. I know from experience that doctors are busy & forget--in fact when I went to see our fertility specialist 3 weeks ago one of his 1st statements to me was, "we need to schedule your HSG," and I had that done last month, which the nurse reminded him.

Be careful about being so critical of the nurse, even if she is young. If she said the Dr. said you could proceed to IVF, he probably said that to her during their case meetings/reviews. My cousin is a nurse so I get to hear the nurses side a lot. Just keep it in mind, and good luck to you!

Me: 42, DH: 43. We are so grateful to have a 2yr old daughter, conceived naturally after 3 miscarriages & no treatments (our Dr. gave us 1 more month to try on our own before advacing to IVF, & we conceived her naturally in January 2010)! Trying since April 2011 without sucess....MD said we were both "fine" & that if it wasn't happening, it was a chromosomal issue. Finally started Follistim 225mcg injections with an Ovidrel trigger November 2012. Bleeding 11 days post Ovidrel on November 25th. Starting the whole lab/Ultrasound/Follistim cycle again on November 27th...
