2nd Trimester

Anyone else w/ ultrasound NOT at 18-20 wks?

I'm just wondering if there is anyone else out there with a similar ultrasound schedule as me.  It seems everyone has a "big ultrasound" at 18-20 weeks.

I opted for the NT scan, and am seeing a perinatologist.  I had an ultrasound and bloodwork with them at 12 and 16 weeks, and another scheduled at 22 weeks.  They determined the sex and looked at major organs at my 16 week.  I have a 20 week appointment with my regular OB, but there won't be an ultrasound.

I guess I just don't understand why my appointments are scheduled 2 weeks on either side of the "normal" timeframe.

I'm ticked because I have an appt at 17w5d and won't get an ultrasound and will have to wait until 21w5d for my big US.  I thought that they would do it at my next appt.  I think I'm going to pay to go in 2 and half weeks and find out.  the 60 bucks i worth it to me.

  • It might have to do with your insurance, or how their schedule is!

Moo, that's what I did. I paid for a 2D ultrasound just to see our little one and get a gender determination. It was WONDERFUL. The tech was super friendly, the environment was much more relaxed than in the hospital, and we got to see our baby move around for awhile. I highly recommend it.

same. Mine is scheduled right at 20 weeks, but I just couldn't wait. I knew that the hospital experience wouldn't really be that great, much more clinical I think.  We got to watch baby for about half an hour, it was a lot of fun.  The tech was really awesome and gave us a bunch of extra photos and stuff too.  I'm still looking forward to the 20 week US to get the anatomy scan, everything looked good, but she's not a doc, so she didn't do any measuring, etc.  I just know it'll be more medical, not just something fun.

  • My doc sceduled my big US early at 17w 5d. Unfortionately they couldn't see everything they needed to because the baby was too small still... and the tech wouldn't give us a for sure answer on the sex cause he felt it was too early... I would have been happy to wait the extra couple of weeks to have peace of mind and a for sure answer on the sex..
  • The Tech who does them at my OB won't do them until at least 20 weeks and I didn't have mine until 21.5 weeks.
  • May just be the way they had other people scheduled..which was my case. My u/s was at 23 weeks. They had a tight schedule and the tech was on vacation too. I was disappointed that it wasn't at 20 weeks which is what I had planned in my mind, but our baby girl was worth the wait!  Good Luck! I have also seen a perinatologist a few times. They are able to see and identify so much more. Maybe this is part of the reason your schedule is off.

    GOOD LUCK!!

this is what we did. It was the best money we spent. My big u/s isn't technically until thursday. I couldn't wait that long
  • Ours was at 21 w 1 d.
  • My next appt is at 19 weeks and I have to wait until 22.  I wanted to kill my dr when he told me that, I was so sad!  He gave me the whole the u/s is to make sure the baby is growing and healthy speech.  I know what it is for but I also know I can find out what our baby is too!  Of course I want a healthy baby!
  • We've been really fortunate and had fairly regular ultrasounds. Our first at 8 weeks, and another during genetic testing at 11 weeks 4 days. Our next is a 4d to determine the sex at 16 weeks - but that one is being done for us as a favor because a family member is a doctor at the hospital.

Our next  OBGYN scheduled ultrasound will be done at 21 weeks. I could really get use to the regular schedule because there is nothing quite as lovely as seeing those wonderful pictures of a little beating heart and a happy, wiggling baby!!!

  • I don't have my big u/s until 22 weeks. Crying
  • Ours was at 18 weeks, and there was no doubt he was a boy!!!! Smile
  • My doctor's office routinely schedules the "big" u/s at 22-24 weeks. It's because they do a lot of high risk and can get a much better assessment of baby's heart that way. It's kind of lame for me because I am not high risk (fingers crossed!) but oh well. The time will come!
