1st Trimester
1st Appt - Retroverted uterus?
Hi Ladies,
I had my 1st appt. today (a little early, I know, but I have thyroid issues so they wanted me to come early). Nothing too eventful occured, but while performing my pelvic, my OB asked "Have I told you before that you have a retroverted uterus?"
I know this means that my uterus is tipped back more than normal people, and I asked her if this meant anything as far as my pregnancy was concerned, and she said not really. She says she just won't be able to palpate the uterine fundus until later when it rises out of the pelvis, and that I might experience more back pain and overall cramping than other women. She said that they only ever see these in very thin women for some reason, and that it used to be thought that they were associated with infertility, but not anymore...
So, a long drawn out story in order to ask has anyone else been told this and should I know anything more about it(read:should I worry about this, haha)? My research so far indicates that sex tends to be very painful for women with uterine retroversion, and that's why it was thought to be associated with inferitility (women just weren't having sex). Also, having a pregnancy/giving labor also sometimes "fixes" the problem by forcing the uterus to position more anteriorly. Any comments/experience/insight? TIA!

This is very, very common. Between 20-30% of women are like this.
My uterus is retroverted. It won't affect your pregnancy in the least.

I wasn't told mine was actually retroverted, but I told them how my mom's doc told her that her uterus was straight up. They told me mine wasn't straight up, but it was definitely angled back more than the average woman. What it meant for me was I didn't show until 20-22 weeks and that was just a little bump. It really didn't appear obvious until 5 1/2 months or more. In fact the first stranger to finally ask when I was due I was 31 weeks along! :-)

This may be a dumb question, but...
my dr. said I have a tilted uterus. Is this the same thing? My dr. told me this at an annual 2 years ago. I saw a different dr for my 1st appt and told her about it and she was surprised it felt tilted because it didn't look like it was, so she didn't answer my questions really.
For those of you who already have children or are farther along than me.... did your dr do/send you for extra ultrasounds if they weren't able to hear the heartbeat because of it? Did you have more "back labor?"
The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.
Yes, I think that's the same thing. My OB didn't act like it was a big deal at all but I just wanted to run it by everyone on here; she didn't act like we'd be doing more ultrasounds or anything like that but I'll probably ask her about it again when I see her in 4 weeks. She said a lot of women with uterine retroversion do experience more "back labor," so maybe you will too.
