Formula bottles to milk...

My daughter is turning 1 next week, and I am transitioning her from her formula bottles to whole milk. The doc said you can just go right to sippy cups breakfast lunch and dinner and she should be getting 16-20 oz a day?! She just started and seems to HATE the milk. She won't drink it out of the sippy and barely out of the bottle. Any thoughts or suggestions? I am nervous that I am going to take out the formula and then what? What if she refuses the milk? What do I do?

Thanks!

Re: Formula bottles to milk...

  • You didn't explicitly say this, but are you mixing the two?

If so, start out with a very small amount of milk and the rest formula. Do that for a week, increase the milk, decrease the formula. Do that for a week, then decrease the formula again.

It might take a few weeks, but milk tastes SO differently from formula that it's best to start off gradual.

  • I would say another thing too is that your daughter may not be happy about the sippy cup!  I am trying to wean my DD off of the bottle all together - to sippy cup - and she is not happy about it.  She throws it on the ground.  I had to give in after two and a 1/2 days cause I felt like she wasn't getting enough fluids - even though she was drinking plenty of water - via sippy cup.  She just has a thing about having to have her milk (formula) in her bottles still!

  • If she won't drink the milk at all, you can always use the next step formula.

However, I would do as posted above- gradually mix the milk in with the formula.
