Parenting after a Loss

Really, how much spit up is too much?

Since I got home at 4:30 (so less than an hour and a half ago).. I have cleaned up at LEAST three giant spit up puddles (plus a bunch of little spit ups) and changed her outfit at least twice (one of the spit up puddles occured while she was only in a diaper and then I brought her out to her baby pool).. I also got drenched this morning before i left for work around 10 to the point where I had to change my entire outfit.. So that has been at least 4 BIG ones today.. and I don't know how many I missed, but her outfit had been changed at least once, probably twice while I was gone..

I have mentioned the excessive spit-up to both our old and new pedi..They have both sort of brushed it off and said it will get better when we start solids..  I thought it had been getting better but yesterday and today have been AWFUL..  Both yesterday and today we had periods of her screaching like she was in pain too.. which I had not seen in a LONG time..

Re: Really, how much spit up is too much?

  • Keep an eye out on the spit ups and the pain.  Is she arching?  This could be a sign of reflux.  When I first mentioned this to our pedi he brushed it off.  We were back in the office several days later because she was in so much pain from the reflux that we coul dnot stop her from crying until she would pass out at night.

BTW, there are things as happy spitters and they dont ahve pain or anything.  So those are ok.

  • She is USUALLY a happy spitter.. so I don't worry too much about it.. every once in awhile we will have a couple BAD days though where it obviously bothers her.. and they seem to coincide with days where it is a LOT of spit up..

  • I can tell you right now, solids don't help. Or at least not once-a-day solids. Ours are spitting up as much as ever.
  • Kate spits up all day long and puddles of it as well and she is on solids 3 times a day.  It doesn't bother her at all just everyone else around her.
  • Zachary is a huge spitter- it's a garaunteed thing that I will change my shirt at least once, he'll have at least 3 outfit changes per day, and he usually gets my husband and my sheets as well.  It makes for a ton of laundry, but we did the whole reflux meds thing and it didn't make a difference.  He still spit, and he was still fussy.  Now he's a relatively happy spitter- he just pukes all of the time. It's frustrating and gross, but that's about it.
  • As far as the amount, that sounds pretty normal.  We changed Ethan's outfits several times a day for the first few months and basically learned to make sure we were covered in burp cloths at all times.

That said, if she seems like she is in pain, that is a different story, but as long as she is having enough wet and dirty diapers every day then she is getting what she needs.

  • Thanks ladies.. I am glad I am not alone.. I always hear "all babies spit up.." but then when I am around other moms with babies they seem horrified at the amount Eve spits up.. And seriously.. how embarrassing is it when she spits up on other peoples floors/furniture/clothes..

  • I can't tell you how many times Ethan spit up all over someone, some thing, some place...whatever....with a big huge SPLASH.

Just bring lots of burp cloths wherever you go.  I loved those Gerber birds eye prefolds....you could get a 12 pack for like $10 I think at BRU.

    Don't worry, its not forever!!
