I kinda feel guilty...

using DSHS when I have medical insurance through my work... I just don't get how anyone can afford medical bills?

They did approve me and I was honest when I applied, it's not like I have terrible benefits, but you wouldn't believe how much we have to pay after the insurance pay's their end. We are still paying of DH's medical bills for his 6 siezures that he had earlier this year, and since the bills started coming in for my visit's to the OB well, I had no idea that a u/s and some blood work would cost that much.

I read that in 2007 around 60% of people who filed for bankruptcy were in part due to medical bills (in excess of 17 K) and that around 70% of those people had health insurance... I thought health insurance was supposd to make health care costs affordable?

    it is SUPPOSED to , but doesn't really. we have great insurance for our area ( i work for the hospital) and i have enough medical debt from my son being ill ( long story) to  buy another house. its just rediculous.

    I live in Canada, so I couldnt imagine what you are going through.  I cant wrap it around my mind that the US does not have health care.  I've been to the hospital 4 times in the past month and could not imagine getting a bill for any of that.

    If you are approved for it, and you were completely honest when applying, dont feel guilty!!!!! That is what its for. By not drowning in medical bill debt, you are doing what is best for you and your baby.

      Don't feel guilty.  You are trying to do what's best for you and your baby, which is responsible.

    Don't feel guilty, that's what it's there for. I was in the same situation when I was pregnant with DS. My out of pocket would have been ridiculous, so I got assistance to pick up what my private insurance wouldn't. This time I have no materntiy benefits (no, I did not TTC knowing this) so I will be doing the same thing.
