Hi girls!
I am planning to convert my office into the nursery, and noticed that the only place we could put the crib is in front of a window. (other walls have closets, doors, and a big Ikea bookcase that I am planning to use as a toy/book shelf)
I am reading this could be a safety issue, WDYT?
Re: Crib placed near window?
Mine is under a window but not pushed totally up against the wall. We will have curtains hang in the window.
Also, our windows are the double paned, earthquake proof (I live in CA), and if they are broken they will not shatter. If you have good windows I dont think there is an issue at all!
Once the child is mobile it could be a safety issue if (a) you have long dangly blind cords hanging down the child could strangle themselves in or (b) if the child could open the window and fall out.
Both those issue can be avoided. You can easily get a window lock so it can't be opened more than 4-5". And, buy a pull down shade, not venetian blinds or a roman shade.
Putting this into perspective, many people have dressers or toy boxes under a window. A mobile child can also easily climb up on one of those to reach the window as well.
At first I don't think that there will be much of an issue... unless you have a draft near that window and it's winter... then you'll most likely want to try and do something about that.
Once baby is more mobile, then yes, it could definitely be a big safety issue.
If you were in CA or any other Earthquake prone area I would say absolutely not ok but you don't get much shakin' in DC.
That being said - I am hoping it is double paned and that you have good blinds and curtains to keep out the chill!
Sounds great.
