Dallas-Fort Worth Babies

I need a drink now.

I just got the weirdest phone call ever. Someone has filed a claim saying that they were in an accident last month with my car. My car has never been in an accident. The only thing I can think of is insurance fraud. The guy from my insurance company told me to take pictures of every side of my car to show that there is no body damage. The timing of this is just great. I feel sick to my stomach.

Re: I need a drink now.

  • What proof do they have?

Don't worry hon.  Your insurance will take care of it.  They don't want to have to pay on a claim any more than you want to either.

    ((hugs))

  • Uh oh! That is scary!

Someone tried to do this to us one time, all they have to do is write down a random license # and make of vehicle (in this case, YOU) and turn it in.

Ours never made it to an actual claim - they just harassed us and then dropped it when we didn't back down.

    That is CRAZY!

This is exactly what I am guessing they did. As far as proof, I haven't the foggiest. I guess it will be my word against theirs and the fact that you can look at my car and see that there is no damage?

  • Ugh!  I would be so annoyed and frustrated!  I agree with Totty though, ins companies never want to pay out if they don't absolutely have to (do any of us really? lol).  GL and i hope it goes smoothly for you!
  • Ugh. ?Sorry you have to deal with this. ?Thats crazy.
  • And now I am convinced that this is karma for posting about being given a car.

  • Can people really get away with this? I think you're fine, but I get that it feels crappy to be scammed by someone.?
  • Aww man that sucks...I am sure the insurance company will get to the bottom on this.
  • It definitely sounds like a scam and it's not karma for the new car, goofy.  :)  This is what I found from a google search:

Paper Accident - This occurs when a criminal aggressively requests others in the auto repair and salvage industry to be a part of accidents that only exist on paper. Sometimes the con will include crooked lawyers, doctors and insurance agents. Most insurance companies don't investigate claims under $1,000. As a result, these claims are almost always below that amount so as not to arouse suspicion.

    FTA:

Rivera told investigators she found about the phony crash only after receiving a letter from the insurance company.

"We believe somebody involved in the scam just wrote her name and license plate number on the reports," Lawrence police Chief John Romero said.

"There's nothing to implicate her to this crash in any way. There's no damage to the car, and the woman never let it out of her possession. As far as Saul Rosario goes, we don't believe this person even exists," Romero said.  ##

Just follow the instructions from your insurance agent and I think you'll be fine.  People are really stupid nowadays.  :(

  • Who does that?! People suck.
