Sick of dog pee

DH and I have a black lab (wonderful, sweet, obedient dog), but every morning I get up to let her and my silky terrier out, there is a huge puddle of pee.  This morning I noticed her doggy bed smells and she has peed on it too.  I don't know what to do.  Luckily it is a sunporch and the floor is cement with sticky tiles over it, but we want to put down real tile eventually but I am afraid she will ruin it.  I don't want to banish her to the outdoors because it gets so hot here.  She holds it for 12 hours when we are work.  I just don't get it.  Oh and I know it's her because the little one pees tiny puddles and tries to hide it.

Re: Sick of dog pee

  • maybe she can sense a change & is acting out.  you can try to limit her water at night before she goes to bed, be  sure to take her to potty before you put her to bed (which I'm sure you do) hopefully it gets better. GL

  • How old is she? Have you taken her to the vet for a check up?

She is 3 years old.  They already had an appt. at the vet for next week so maybe they can check her urine and see if she has a bladder infection. I really hope not poor baby.  I love the pics of your dogs :)

  • My dog started having that problem just  a month and half ago.

It was a heart murmur. His heart wasn't working well enough for him to control his bladder all the time.

We fixed that with meds and 3 weeks later it started again. This time he had compressed 3 vertebrae and the pinched/inflamed nerves to his lower body were the issue.

It might be a symptom of something more serious and fixable. Get it checked out.

  • Is she going in the same spot?  If so, it may be a scent thing.  Make sure you clean the area really well and use some sort of odor eliminator product after you clean.  We have a rescue dog that can have marking issues.  When he has an accident, we clean it up really well, then use this....

It totally eliminates all odor and I know it works because our dog has NEVER messed in the same spot.

  • I had this problem with my doggies for a bit in the beginning weeks of pregnancy. My vet said they can smell the extra hormones and know that I am acting a bit different so they are acting out a bit and re-marking "their" territory.. So I give them lots of extra love and I have a dogwalkeer come in every afternoon for an afternoon walk and some love!

A dogwalker would help alot...12 hours is too long to hold it. I know I couldn't...and if you can't, neither can your friend.

  • I also recommend the Nature's Miracle. ?My cat was having a problem with UTIs and we kept spraying it everywhere she peed (out of fear that our kitten would start peeing in the same spots!) and it worked like a charm.

  • My mom had an Australian Shepard a few years back and we noticed she started peeing on the floor when my step dad had moved to NC for a job.  She never peed on the floor before that so we figured she was doing it bc she missed him.  Well when my mom finally moved down to NC with my stepdad she continued to pee on the floor.  They took her to the vet and she had little rock sized calcium deposits in her bladder.  She had surgery to take them out and then was fine.

Thank you everyone for the input.  I will call the vet and see if I can at least get a urine sample to her before the appt.  I hope it's nothing too serious, now I am going to worry myself to death lol!  I agree 12 hours is a long time to hold it.  We are getting a doggy door, it's been ordered and then they can go as they please :)

  • In the meantime before you get your dog to the vet, have you thought about letting her out again in the middle of the night?  I'm sure you're probably getting up a few times yourself, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal to help her out a little.  This may also help give her some better bathroom associations so she doesn't "revert" to not being housebroken.

Kelsey, the black dog, has had issues with crystals in her urine. The crystals have caused her to pee randomly and lick herself more. We had to take a urine sample in and have it tested. We have managed to control the type of crystals through diet (we have to feed prescription Science Diet - crappy food but it works for condition) and have so far avoided having to have surgery.

I would defintiely talk to the vet and take in a urine sample when she goes next week. FYI - a tin pie pan or paint tray liner work well to catch urine. In the meantime, definitiely check out Nature's Miracle and try restricting her water before bed.

    Good luck!

  • Definitely take a urine sample to the vet, just in case. My Italian Greyhound was having accidents and I was ready to get rid of him... but then he peed on my husband while on his lap... then I knew something was wrong!  It was a uti and some medicine cleared it up.  Taking away water at night is also a good idea.  We don't give water after 8:30 if we go to bed around 10.

Does your dog let you know when he has to go out, or do you just let him out regularly?  With our new puppy we got the doorbell that she can ring and it makes life so much easier... that way I?m not letting her out and waiting for her to do something.

  • since the puddle of pee is there every morning maybe u should give her a cut off time of when to drink water, example: take her water away at 8pm & walk your dog right before going to bed so she can empty her bladder. I use to live in a condo & that is what we use to do with our dog.. it worked ! occasionally he would need to go in the middle of the night & he would wake me up & i would take him outside. R you waking up in the middle of the night?? if you are, maybe u can take him outside for a minute even though u think he doesnt have to pee, something might come out & you wont have to clean up the next morning Big Smile

  • I have a sliky terrier!  Best dog ever...except we just moved and he has reverted to a strange puppy phase.  Including escaping the back yard and marking his territory in the house (and he already has a doggy door).  :Sigh!:

GL with the lab and hopefully the doggie door will help!
