3rd Trimester

dental work has anyone had any done

Has anyone had any dental work done while pregnant? I cracked a tooth and need to get it fixed it is really starting to hurt but I am terrified of the novacain and/or lidocaine that they use to numb it. Does anyone know if it is safe?

Re: dental work has anyone had any done

  • it probably depends on the practitioner.  my dentist is okay with work being done in the third trimester.

  • i had a filling at 20w and its safe to use that kinda of numbing...no x-rays though...

  • I had dental work done when I was a little over 20 weeks or so.  I had to get written ok from my OB before they would see me.

  • I had absessed tooth pulled in the first trimester.  The just gave novocaine.  It was the after part that was more painful with just tylenol.
  • I had to have a wisdom tooth out at 35weeks last time. They just numbed me up and took it out.    So numbing is okay, but they might want an okay from your doc.
  • I had dental work done in my 1st tri when one of my fillings fell out. The dentist used Novocaine....

  • I had some follow-up work to a root canal done in the second trimester that involved novocaine. It was fine.

  • Yes it is safe. I've had three fillings and two root canals done while I've been pregnant. X-rays are fine too as long as they are really needed, you aren't in your first tri, and they double shield you.

  • It's safe but most dentists won't do it without your OB's permission. So it will boil down to what your practice allows/suggests.

I had a wisdom tooth removal a couple weeks ago. OB ok'ed everything (numbing, pain meds, etc) except for full mouth xrays.

  • Thanks. I can't get in until next week anyways. It seems that no dental offices are open on fridays. what a crock. Now I am more annoyed than in pain

  • my dentist won't do much when your pregnant (and I trust and adore my dentist) and I have not been in about a year, and I KNOW i have something wrong with one of my teeth, I hope I don't wait to long but I will wait until after I have the baby to go (pump and dumb I guess). I hope I don't need a root canal, I should have gone 2 months ago but I am dumb!
  • I needed a root canal at around 20 weeks. The dentist wouldn't see me without a not from my OB. Then I had to use a certain type of novicane, which didn't work and I was in excruciating pain everytime they tried to start working on my tooth. After 2 hours of shots in my gums and in between teeth they got it as numb as they could, but not numb enough to be able to do a root canal. Since they had started drilling a few times and I was already in pain before I went in I couldn't just leave it so.... I had to get it pulled with only being 1/2 - 3/4 numb. It hurt so bad!! I hope you have a better experience than I did!
  • Very safe. ?I had 1 extraction and one root canal, it might of hurt a touch more than normal because he couldn't over numb me like he normally does, but he did an excellent job, and all is well, this was during my first trimester and early seond, but I'm sure it's fine now. ?It is more dangerous to let it linger, it can lead to premature labor. ?

    ?

Good luck you'll be fine. ??

  • Thanks. I am just being paranoid about the numbing medicine I guess. Thanks for all the advice
