Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Still a baby at 1 year old?

We were at music class yesterday and a little girl RUNS up to us and says "Hi", then points to herself and says "Chloe", then points to my DS and says "awww, baby" and patted Asher on the head. I asked the mom how old she was and she's only 7 weeks older than my DS. LOL.

I truly don't feel competitive about these kinds of things, but I was thinking about it last night and little Chloe is right. My DS is still so much a baby. He's on the small side and mostly bald, doesn't say any words, isn't walking (but is taking a few steps!), barely eats any solids, and still takes 4 bottles a day (because he wont eat). He's been in the normal range for his milestones and I don't worry about it, except for the not eating thing which I worry about constantly. People keep asking me how I feel about having a toddler next week and I just want to laugh, my DS is so not a toddler! Or maybe I'm just in denial.

Anyone else feel like their DC is still a baby?

Re: Still a baby at 1 year old?

  • I sometimes wish my DS was still like a baby. His cousins that are turning or have just turned 1 year old I think of as babies but DS is a full on toddler.

He even considers himself not a baby. He points out other little ones and says baby but says big boy about himself.

G does this too (well, she says big girl) but it cracks me up.  Don't feel bad, technically, they are "infants" until 24 months, another factoid I didn't know before having a kid.

  • Well, DD has been changing so rapidly these past few weeks that maybe I can't say she's a baby anymore.  But when she was one, she definitely was still a baby.  She barely would crawl (although she could).  She was having serious eating issues and was taking bottles mostly.  She babbled a great deal but didn't say words.  She was way behind other kids her age.  Then on her first birthday moved to another state, and suddenly the whole world changed for her.  It must have been really confusing for a while.

But like I said the past few weeks she has been learning so many new skills it blows my mind daily.  I thought she was cute as a baby, but she is so, so fun as a toddler.  I just try to enjoy the ride.

  • I still feel that my son is a baby.
  • I still think of DS as a baby, and, of course, he'll always be my first baby. :)
  • Adam pointed at a little boy who was clearly older (maybe 2) and said "baby" the other day. I started laughing and said, "buddy, he's older than you are!"

  • My neice and nephew are both turning 1 in two weeks. I feel like they are still babies. I don't think I felt Ryan seemed "baby-ish" at that age but looking back now, he totally was. 7 weeks is a looong time at this age. I feel just recently over the past few weeks DS has become a toddler.

  • I still feel like my son is a baby as well.  I am okay with that. :)

  • Let's see, my DS -

    Doesn't sleep through the night

Still breastfeeds as much as ever

Won't drink more than 1 oz. of cow's milk

    Isn't walking on his own

Still eats Stage 2 baby food (but will eat some table food now, thank goodness)

Yeah, I'd say he's still in the baby category.

  • Don't take offense, my DD calls everyone that is not an "adult" a "baby" including herself!

I definitely did not take offense, she was adorable! It just made me think of how much more my DS looks/seems like a baby to ME compared to a child who is walking and talking (and even dancing).

  • My DD will be one in a week and she is totally still a baby. She is just barely starting to crawl, is small, 17pds and adorable. She constantly babbles and feeds herself, but I consider all little ones babies until they are walking. My older DD didn't walk until 15.5 months, and once she started walking I remember I would get irritated when people called her a baby. But I think for me, that was a first child thing. Since DD#2 is our last, I'm totally okay with her being a baby for a long time! :)

So for me, they are all babies until walking and then they are toddlers. That make sense?

  • I know technically DD is probably considered a toddler (walks, no bottles etc) but I'm not quite there yet!! Maybe next month............ :)
