Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Wow, my state hates co-sleeping.

I just saw a new horrible ad for their "NEVER sleep with an infant" campaign. Complete with a reinactment situation of a baby dying, and then lots of scary stats. Weird, and waaayyyyy over the top. Anyone else seen something like this? (I don't even co-sleep mind you, and whether you're for it or not, the ad was still way over the top IMO.) Horrifying.

Re: Wow, my state hates co-sleeping.

  • when i lived in IN, they'd show commercials of a mom sleeping on the couch with her newborn, and the dad would come to take video of them, but then the baby wouldn't wake up, and then the screen would go black and you could hear them freaking out.

    it was disgusting.

  • I've seen those commercials. I've also seen a lot of sad news stories about infants who have been smothered while co-sleeping. I don't judge anyone for doing it - but that fear is the #1 reason I wouldn't.

That was the one they just showed!!! And then a screen of all these stats that 10 babies died within 2 weeks in just one county from co-sleeping... Geez, it was awful!!!

  • I've never seen anything like that in Ontario. But I've seen some of the ad campaigns going in the States about cosleeping.

I think it's ridiculous to use blatant fear-mongering as opposed to healthy education about when, and when NOT to, cosleep.

After the Obama abortion ads, I don't underestimate what they will do.

Amen! I love co-sleeping, but man, was I scared to do it. When K was born, dh and I would take turns sleeping on the floor with her because we were so paranoid!!

yep.  i hate scare tactics of any kind.

  • I don't know. I would say its advertising for the lowest common denominator, KWIM? And through my job, I have seen several cases of terrible things happening to small babies due to being in the same bed as their parents, so I don't think its completely off base to advertise the dangers. FYI: the cases I have seen have not been due to alcohol or drug abuse. Just overly tired parents. l'm not against co sleeping if it works for a family but there can be dangers.

  • I guess you just need to judge how deep you sleep, how much you move around, ect..I usually don't co-sleep, but ecspecially with my first son I'd nurse him at like 4am and let him sleep with me until we got up for good.I can't imagine rolling over on a baby or smothering one.But I sleep light, I woulden't recommend DH do that-he could sleep through a bomb.

I guess you just have to be very careful, I know I love snuggling up to my baby now and again. They should not villainize it so much, people have been co-sleeping from the beginning of time, just like with almost any other routine, accidents can happen anytime anywhere.

Eeek! You know, they need to be more careful what they put on tv. There are kids watching that stuff and they can be really affected by commercials like these.

When I was younger I saw anti-trying to outrun the train ad. It showed this mom with her baby in the backseat attempting to outrun a train and stalling out on the tracks. She gets out of the car and then goes to get her baby out, but she accidentally locked the keys in the car and can't get in. She starts screaming and freaking out, the train his the car, and she is just running after it screaming "My baby! My baby!"

I swear I was traumatized by that. I had nightmares and I still get a sick feeling just remembering it. I've gotten fixated on the thought of something horrible like that happening a few times with Leo when I've been waiting for a train to go by too.

I guess the upside is that I will never attempt to outrun a train. Ever.

  • Did you hear about the lady who "rolled" over her baby while sleeping? It was in the Star on Wednesday and there's a follow-up story today about how the baby had an undiagnosed heart issue and it nothing to do with co-sleeping/rolling over on the baby.

People were commenting in the Star story and were plain out MEAN.  Like this poor women did it on purpose, etc.  They ended up deleting the old article and comments.

The commercials make me sick to my stomach.

  • Those commercials sound awful No

  • I live in Indiana too but haven't seen that commercial.  It would definitely freak me out though!  I don't necessarily co-sleep but I do have DD come in bed with me in the early morning and sleep with me when I am in a light sleep.  I try to be really careful though because I'm paranoid.  I lay on my back and she lays across my chest in my arms.  I didn't really do that with her when she was really tiny though.

  • They make a big push with radio ads in my region.  It's honestly what made me so nervous when DD was young, but then we spent most of her 5th month letting her sleep in the middle of our bed.  The county where I grew up has a high rate of infant deaths, but I don't for a second believe it's ONLY b/c of co-sleeping.
  • I know everyone loves cosleeping and I am not judging at all because I have put my kiddos in the bed while infants from time to time but at work, we get calls all.the.time. for parents that decided to sleep in the bed and either laid on the child and didn't know it or something else happened and they died. It is really sad and happens alot.
