2nd Trimester

Does your OB/Midwife measure you??

Does your OB or midwife measure you at every check-up?  I kept reading in books about docs measuring you.....but mine still has yet to do so.  Just wondering if it's odd she hasn't.....

Re: Does your OB/Midwife measure you??

  • I think that started during my last pregnancy in the third trimester (maybe at my 28 week appointment?).
  • My ob has always felt my ute to see where it is but she told me next appointment they will start measuring using inches..she said it will be a little bit more scientific!
  • They did at the last appointment.
  • So far, no.

  • Mine hadn't until this past appointment (26 weeks).
  • Mine didn't until the last appointment, but from what I've read those measurements are pretty useless anyways

  • Mine did the first time at my 22 week appointment this week.
  • Have you had your 24 weeks check up yet?  That is usually when they start measuring you.  Before 20 weeks they cannot tell much from it so they don't measure.  At my 24 week apt was the first time I get measured.  However my DH is a doc so he measures me from time to time.
  • Mine has measured at my last couple appts.
  • My OB always felt the fundus (top of your uterus) at every appt to make sure it was growing adequately, but my June appt was the first one she busted out the tape measure for...and said I was measuring at 26w while I was only 24w.

  • I just got back from an appt and got measured for the first time. My OB said they typically don't start measuring until you are in (or close to being in) the 3rd trimester.

  • Mine started at 25ish weeks.  I think that as long as I'm within 3 cm either way, it's considered normal, so it almost seems like they could just estimate by feeling still, but whatever.

  • I just switch from an OB to a birthing center with midwives cause I just didn't click with the OB and wanted a natural water birth. When the midwife went to measure me for the first time at my 25 week visit i made the comment that my old Dr. had never even done that and she said up until 24 weeks it's assumed your utrus is up to you belly button around 24 weeks it begind to pass your belly button and you should measure in cms whatever week you are so 25 week means 25 cm. Hope that helps.
  • My midwife just started doing this at my last appointment which was this Wednesday.

  • Yes, I am measured at every appt.  I'd ask her at your next appt why she hasn't yet.
