they let me get up and move as far as the monitors would allow which was about 4 feet but at least i could bounce on my ball or stand up and lean over the bed - no shower because they wouldn't let me take the monitors off which annoyed me but whatever.
I wasn't bed-ridden until they put in the epidural. But it would be hard to get in the shower since you have so much hooked up to you - even without the pit. It was difficult enough to go to the bathroom (I had to go #2 twice while in labor).

I was able to get up and move around until I got the epi, but it was a pain to get up and move around attached to the IV so I only got up to go to the bathroom
I was completely mobile the entire time I was on pitocin. I was able to walk the halls, get into the tub, and do anything else I felt comfortable with. I would just ask your doctor if the hospital that you're delivering at has portable monitors or not. Because if they do, there's no reason why you should be stuck in bed if you dont want to be.

I got up to go to the bathroom as needed, which involved unhooking the belly monitors, removing the BP cuff, and rolling the IV with me. I was allowed to shower in the AM, which involved all of the above, plus unhooking the IV. I didn't ask or try for more.
I was stuck in bed and had a catheter. But I was also induced because of pre-e and in addition to the pit, I also had magnesium sulfate and a couple of painkillers for the headache in my IV as well.
My water broke at home but was not having contractions so I was on pitocin. I was stuck in bed because ds didn't drop and was really high so they were worried that the cord would be delivered first so I was stuck in bed. Since I was already stuck in bed I got the epidural at 1cm. Plus prior to the epidural I had to use the bed pan which was not fun.
I laid down in that bed at 5:30 that morning to be induced and didnt get out of the bed till 10 at night which was 2 hours after my baby came... I wanted to get in the shower during labor but not with the IV in my hand
If I was able to endure it without an epi I could've labored next to my bed but not too far since you need to be hooked up to monitors. They also had to be able to hear the babies heart beat and if they couldn't I would need to go into bed. I only made it a couple of contractions without it..but it was kind of hard being hooked up to all of the monitors. HTH!
I was encouraged to get up and walk, use the birthing ball, change positions, go to the bathroom, etc. The monitors stayed in place and they used a wireless transmitter attached to the IV pole.
Re: Pitocin induction gals...
I got up and went to the bathroom and also got to take a shower, but I was on it for almost 72 hours before we decided c-section.
I stayed in bed but was allowed to go to the bathroom. When I got to the hospital I was already 5 cm dilated though and didn't know it.
