TTC after 35

1st RE Visit was Today (LONG)

So, our appointment was at 10:30.   We arrived early for "paperwork" which we had already done.  Due to an emergency, we didn't see the doctor until 11:30.  I told DH that after waiting until I was 39 to have a baby, the last hour might just put me under.  I had been so nervous that I lost my breakfast before we left the house.  (Sad, I know, but not that unusual for me.)

Anyway, the appointment went really well, I thought.  Of course, because it was me, there had been a mix up with the paperwork.  The wrong file was sent home with the doctor last night, so he hadn't had a chance to review my records.  Being the control freak I am, I was happy to walk him through them.

The best news of the day was when he said my 17 FSH was most likely my body 'over-compensating' for the CP the cycle before.  We are going to redo on my next CD3 (likely at a lab on the beach in Gulf Shores, AL, since there is where I will be).  He says I don't need a progesterone test, since my numbers there looked good.  The second best news of the day came when he said I would have a SHG, not a HSG, on CD7.  Since I did get the BFP, he thinks my tubes are OK.

I am really excited that he recommends going directly to IVF.  I prefer this for several reasons.  First, I have great insurance, but who knows how long that will last.  Second, I know we want more than one child, so we can save some eggs (which of course we couldn't do with IUI).  Finally, I told him I wanted to do genetic testing on the embryos.  He left that open to discussion, because he said that recent evidence suggests that taking cells from the embryos does harm them.  (We'll, tackle that decision later.) He basically recommended IVF because of my age (39).  He doesn't want to "waste" time and cycles.

After lunch (yes, we left and came back) DH had the SA.  Now, here's where things got interesting.  After about 15 minutes DH emerged to the lobby with sweat on his face, breathing heavy, and his short BUTTONED UP INCORRECTLY (yes, off one button).  I was like, "Um couldn't you pull yourself back together in the restroom before you came out!?"  Anyway, he said it was fairly difficult to accomplish in a strange room, but he is proud that it only took 15 minutes.  He told me the room had porn, magazines and DVDs.  And the DVDs were were pirated!

After the SA we had bloodwork done, which we weren't expecting.  Mine was a breeze, but they couldn't find DH's vein.  They poked in both arms and kept asking him why he was out of breath and sweating. Finally he just said, "Um I just gave another fluid sample!"

So, we left 4 hours after the initial appoinment, DH sweating, out of breath, and with giant bandages on both arms.  We had already called into work for the afternoon, so we went and had drinks.  I am now writing this under the influence of a Blood Mary.  Drinks

So, that's my story.  Thanks for listening.

Re: 1st RE Visit was Today (LONG)

  • LOL, very entertaining. Yay, I'm glad it went well! So, what would the basic schedule be? Testing next cycle and then moving forward with preparations for IVF after that?

    Thanks! :)

Yep, testing this cycle and then IVF, which would be mid-August.  Of course, I was fantasizing about starting immediately next cycle, but down deep I knew that wouldn't be realistic.

I actually asked why we needed to test if we knew we were doing IVF, and he said to determine the type of protocol.

  • I am still giggling over a sweaty DH having to explain himself to the nurse! I'm glad that you got some peace of mind from your visit. My RE seems to be consistently late, too. But sometimes he gives us a free ultrasound or knocks us down some on the paperwork charges. I hope you get more good answers from your doctor and can begin IVF soon. Sounds very encouraging!

  • Fran - I'm glad your appointment went well and that RE is ready to get you a sticky BFP!!   LMAO on DH being so proud of himself for finishing in 15 minutes and being all sweaty with a missed buttoned shirt. Thanks for making me Big Smile

  • Your post has me cracking up!  Good for you deciding to go straight with IVF.......Hope you guys enjoyed the drinks....definitely well deserved!!!
  • Girl you made me laugh.  I had to read the part about his SA to the hubs since he just had his 3rd.  He said our RE has the DVD's from the porn magazines!  LOL!  Everyoneis right though...August is right around the corner!

  • Glad your visit went well.  Your sweaty DH and the incorrectly buttoned shorts made me laugh out loud for about 10 minutes.  Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks for sharing your story.  My DH and I are now in the process of meeting an RE.  Waiting to get paperwork in mail and some tests done then we meet.  I read my DH your post.  He got a good laugh out it too:)  I can only imagine how my DH will handle an on demand sample...LOL.

I'm a little ignorant to this whole RE thing so can I ask why they are going directly to IVF?  I understand if you wish not to answer that question.  I'm just courious for myself what they will say.  Not sure I would be prepared for IVF as my solution but thought I better be prepared and get some knowledge before this appt. since your post gave me a wakeup call.

    GL to you two:)

  • Thanks for the funny story! That is classic!!
  • WOW!  What an adventure...and it's just the beginning.

    Good Luck!

  • awwwh GDF, sounds like things went well and very promising.  Your DH cracks me up and sounds like how my DH would have responded (he's silly/goofy)

I am thinking good thoughts for y'all and wish you the best with this.

  • I'm still trying to understand why he needed to take his shirt off. Confused

This is exactly what I was wondering!

Fran, I'm so happy for you that you got some great news yesterday. And that you're married to such a funny guy!

    Keep us posted.

  • That's quite a day!  Glad you were able to do all of that at once!  Yesterday I had to take my DH's sample to the lab, quite a feat!  He does NOT want to do at directly at the lab.

FYI - my RE also is suggesting moving right to IVF and bypassing IUI because there is no time to waste with my high FSH.

This is exactly what I was thinking! I did just LMAO though!! Funny stuff!

I'm glad you got a plan! FWIW...my RE wanted to go straight to IVF because of my FSH but we were already in the process of IUI #2 when we went in for follow up consult and then we went on vaca...so I am right there with you!!  Let me know if you have any ??'s.
