Question re: food allergy rash...

We just started supplementing with formula a few weeks ago (maybe 2?  I can't remember). Anyway, for the last 2 days, DS has had a "rash" - looks like "baby acne" all over his body - so his skin isn't all pink or red, but the little "dots"are.  4 days ago, we used the same formula but it had more iron added.

No fever, no vomitting (just his normal reflux spitup).

Pedi said possibly the formula - but they don't think it would be much different just because it had added iron.  Said it may be the heat.  But it's been damn hot for some time now.

We're keeping an eye on it and went back to the formula w/o the extra iron.

Just wondering if this sounded familiar?

Re: Question re: food allergy rash...

  • Could it be Keratosis Pilaris? DD has that. It's almost like "rough" skin.

  • I have been very fortunate to not having to supplement (c'mon after bf for the past 3 years?? haha) but could it be the formula? What are you using?

I was always told if I needed to supplement, to use Goodstart bc it mostly "resembles" bm. (I don't know how much truth that holds) But have you tried switching brands?

The heat issue, has he been outside frequently (walks, taking dog out, errands, etc?) I would think you would notice if LO was overheated let alone getting a heat rash, given you can't stay out long in this heat with bebes.

I'm not sure if I was any help, but I hope it gets better and keep us posted. Doesn't sound like it's a terrible reaction but one to be concerned of certainly.

I have this, as well as Jack (poor mouse!).  It sucks, but it has gotten better as I've gotten older.

  • We've been using Enfamil Lipil for the couple/few weeks.  4 days ago, we started using Enfamil Lipil w/ extra iron.  2 days ago, the rash appeared.

He's not out in the heat anymore than he used to be.  He's either in an AC'd house/car/store.  The only time he's outside is when transporting him to or from the car.

We didn't actually see the pedi, just spoke over the phone.

I don't think it's that....it's allover his body and doesn't really resemble that pic. or sound like what is described....however, I'm not ruling anything out.

  • I think I remember DD having this when she was about four or five months old, and it went away after a few days. I don't know if it's normal or not - or maybe it was a reaction to something I ate as she was EBF at the time.?

    P.S. YGPM. ?

  • Have you recently switched soap/wash?  I ask because that sounds very similar to the rash DS had when we switched to JNJ baby wash.  He had little bumps all over his body.  Once I switched to Dove soap, it was gone.

Nope.  We've been using JNJ baby wash from day one.  DH and I have been wracking our brains for any little thing.

DH suggested the DOC band....I had to point out to him that the only place the "rash" isn't appearing is on scalp - he does have a little on his nose and cheeks.

Hm.  I hadn't thought about that.....because I do still BF at home......Crap, now I've gotta remember everything I ate in the last several days and I've been pigging out - probably the reason all of my clothes are tight on me lately.

  • Ike gets a rash sometimes and the pedi gave us a medicated cream for it.  Goes away within a day or two :o)
  • It could just be a viral rash that will go away on its own.
  • Maybe eczema...maybe not though since it's all over his body.  Both of my boys have had little red dots and it turned to be eczema, but it wasn't all over their body.
