Poll: Food after delivery

Lesli inspired this post on the nest board.

1.  What is/was the first thing you wanted to eat after delivery?

2   If you already delivered, did you get it?

Re: Poll: Food after delivery

  • I just wanted anything!  It was almost midnight before I got any food so I just took what the hospital offered me....stuffed shells, ice cream, green beans.... and let me tell you, it was heavenly!

    1. I wanted an Italian Hoagie.  For some reason, I really missed lunch meat, especially Italian hoagies.  Heating up the meat did not let them taste the same!

    2.  I did not get it until about 3 weeks later!  I had a C-section, so I couldn't eat solid food until dinner the next day, and my hospital actually had really good food, so I didn't mind eating the hospital food.  Then about a week after we broughtDD home, we ordered out and I orded an Italian hoagie, we wound up heading to the emergency room because she looked blue (she was OK though) and I never got that hoagie.  I figured I would stop trying at that point!

  • After I delivered I did not care what I got to eat as long as I got food.  I had a regular dr. appt the day I delivered, drove myself to the dr. office they sent me to the hospital for a U/S and then I went to l/d and the only thing I had eaten since the night before was some graham crackers since I was taking myself out to lunch after my dr. appt.

That all happened on Friday, they induced me and eventually did a C/S on Saturday afternoon, I was basically out of it until Sunday morning from the morphin and by time I woke up at 8:00 am on Sunday morning I was starving.  I had to have liquid diet so they gave me coffee (I don't drink), hot tea (can't stand it) orange jello (I would rather starve) and chicken broth (wasn't very good).  The nurse got me a chocolate and a vanilla pudding, I ate that felt fine and had lunch a couple of hours later.

I pretty much ate whatever I wanted while I was pregnant, hence the 43 lb weight gain so I wasn't really craving anything.

  • LOL, I'm glad I inspired this post!

The first thing I would LOVE to eat after I give birth is a DQ blizzard!!!!  For a girl who lives on them all year long, it has been horrible not to have one at all this summer since I got diagnosed with GD.  I have been making a long list of foods that I can't WAIT to have in a couple weeks.  Here are some that are on my list (beware, it is long...GD is tough on a pregnant lady).

    - DQ Blizzard

    - Ham/Cheese Sub from Brothers Pizza

    - Cake/cupcakes (I froze a couple pieces of cake from my baby shower)

    - CEREAL (I miss this so much)

    - Orange Juice (I have a glass every single morning but can't because of GD)

    - Donuts from Dunkin Donuts

    - French Toast (my favorite breakfast food)

    - Pancakes or Waffles

    - Candy of any type

    - Soda or something other than WATER (I miss iced tea a lot too)

    - Tuna sub

    - Wendy's hamburger and fries...with a frosty

    - Cinnamon buns

    - Spaghetti (mmmm....pasta)

    - Piece of cherry pie (or any type of pie for that matter)

    - Pizza

    - Macaroni salad (I missed out on a lot of picnic foods this summer)

    - Broccoli cheddar soup in a bread bowl from Panara Bread

    - The Malard sandwich from Issacs Deli

    - Open faced roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes from Bob Evans

    - Yogurt

    - Many, many more....

I can't have ANY of this stuff now with GD.  Can you tell that I can't wait for this baby to come?!?!  LOL!  Now, this doesn't mean that I am going to go hog wild after I give birth because I still need to eat healthy for BFing but I will make sure I get to indulge in these items shortly after Keaton arrives.

  • I had pizza after delivering both my girls.
  • Cherry Coke Slushie!

Lesli - trick I learned from having GD - I had to be induced, so I went 20+ hours without food. They kept checking my sugars throughout the day, and if they were low, they would offer me fruit juice. After I delivered I was STARVING and thirsty, but I couldn't eat or drink anything for an hour in case there were complications. I told the nurse that I thought my blood sugar was dropping and she brought me a gingerale post delivery. It was the best gingerale of my life!!

Oh, and be forewarned - the test strips they use in the hospital are MUCH more painful then the meters we use at home.
  • 1. I just wanted anything by that point. By time time I got anything, it had been 35 hours since my last meal and that was two hard tacos and some fried mushrooms at Grandpa Growlers.

    3.  I had a crappy muffin and some plain cheerios but it was sooo good bc I was starving. The lunch they brought was gross so DH got me a bacon cheeseburger and fries which was probably a little too much since I'd just had the csection like 14 hours earlier but it was DELICIOUS.  I am looking forward to a good mojito here this weekend.

Thanks so much for that tip!!!  I actually get a very nervous/shaky feeling when I don't eat/drink for awhile so I may really need that ginger ale.  I bet just having that juice every once and awhile was heaven too.  I can't wait for my first post delivery meal....MMMMMM!

  • I'm probably one of the only people who actually was able to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the day I delivered.  I went to the hospital at 8am for a BP check so I ate breakfast before that.  I ended up being induced with the prostaglandin gel which apparently isn't considered a labor inducing treatment, so the hospital ordered me lunch.  DS was born at 4:25pm, so the hospital ordered me dinner.  Then my DH went out to dinner with MIL and FIL and they brought me back a HUGE piece of chocolate cake which I devoured.

I don't really remember planning to eat anything specific right after delivery.  I did make plans to eat some seared tuna and caesar salad.

Lesli, that list is insane.  I don't even know how you typed it out without drooling all over your keyboard!  You're such a champ with this GD thing, and I really applaud you for it!  Keaton will be here soon, and you'll be back to eating all your favorites in no time!

  • I definitely should NOT have read this post b/c I don't think I can eat anything listed.  It all sounds heavenly.  DH keeps asking me what I want to eat when I can eat again and I can't make up my mind.  I do know that it will NOT be RICE... NO Rice Krispies, rice milk, rice cakes, or plain rice.

    1. I was craving something sweet after delivery.  I ate the entire cake that the hospital gave us.

    2. The first thing I ate was chicken tenders and french fries.  OMG, it was so good and I'm dreaming about eating that again.

  • I was so hungry I didnt care what I ate. I ordered an open face roast beef sandwich from the hospital room service and it was the best thing I had ever eaten lol

I really didnt have any strong cravings since there wasnt anything I couldnt eat while I was pregnant (I dont like a lot of the restricted items)

  • I can't say that there was anything special I wanted to eat after delivery. I didn't have any restrictions and pretty much ate whatever I wanted during my pregnancy. I did have plenty to eat before DD was born... my labor was very unexpected and very fast. My water broke at my baby shower, after we ate :-). I went to the hospital a few hours later, was there for a short time, they gave me percocet and ambien and sent me home. I was back at the hospital giving birth 2 hours later. I was so tired that I don't even remember getting moved from L&D to PP. So obviously food was the last thing on my mind! I did eat what ever the hospital served for breakfast hours later, but I don't remember what it was!

Same thing this time around... no resrtictions, so there probably won't be anything special I want afterward.

  • Obviously it won't be RIGHT after I deliver, but I've been looking forward to a gourmet meal for a long time: rare tuna, dressings/sauces made with uncooked eggs, unpasteurized imported cheeses, as much red wine as I want, etc.

I've indulged in small bits every now and then, but it seems every time over the past nine months DH and I have considered treating ourselves to a new restaurant or fancy dinner, we opt not to until I can enjoy what I really want to eat!

  • Cookie batter!  I made cookies last week and it was so tough to not lick that damn spoon.
  • All I cared about was getting a drink and sleeping afterwards. I had a c-section and didn't get to my room until midnight. And I hadn't slept at all the night before because I was being induced in the morning. I guess the first food was breakfast when they brought it to my room, although I learned later I wasn't supposed to have had that so soon after the surgery. I did fine with it though. It was actually pretty funny, the nurse said something about letting her know when I was able to fart, because then I could have solid lunch. I was like, "um, I had solid breakfast. And I'm farting just fine..."

  • 1.  What is/was the first thing you wanted to eat after delivery? All I really wanted was an enormous glass of water. There was a high chance of me having a c-section (due to DD's heart decels) that they wouldn't let me have water. Plus the oxygen made me thirsty as all get out/

2   If you already delivered, did you get it? I got a few glasses of water and then I had some cereal and fruit punch to drink (mind you it was 3:30am when all was said and done and I was able to eat!)

  • 1. ?Right after I delivered all I wanted was ginger ale and saltines. ?I was so sick after pushing for 3 hours and throwing up about every other push. ?My stomach was a little fuzzy afterwards. ?Luckily it was about 3am by the time i got to my room, so i was able to go to sleep.

    2. ?I did get my ginger ale and it was very tastey, and full of ice which made it even better. ?When i finally felt good enough to eat, I had a bagel with cream cheese.

May I also mention the food at Women's and Babies hospital in Lancaster was amazing!! ?It was the best food ever!?
