My sister's middle name is Lane, named after Lane Frost - the bull rider that the movie 8 Seconds was about. So I think that spelling works for a boy or a girl. However, I do like the other two spellings. I think you can do whatever you want!
For a boy I'd say Lane since the only Lane (of any spelling) I know is a boy with this spelling (and I will tell you I generally want to drop kick his whiney butt with in 10 minutes of being in his presence).

My friend's middle name is Laine.
Guess I should specify she is a she.

Laine for a girl. Like Elaine without the E.
For a boy I'd spell it Layne, because if *I* were to name my son this, I'd be naming him after Layne Staly.
Lane = boy
Layne = girl
I like Lane for a boy and Layne for a girl.
Lane or Layne for a boy, Layne or Laine for a girl.
Either the i or y spelling for a girl.
For a boy I'd say Lane since the only Lane (of any spelling) I know is a boy with this spelling (and I will tell you I generally want to drop kick his whiney butt with in 10 minutes of being in his presence).
