Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Work and time off - need help

We lost our baby on july 1st. At my workplace they inmediately gave me until tomorrow off. But today they called, and said that I could take from monday july 13th until august 17th off from work. So I can recover physically, emotionally, and mentally. I call DH and he says that is better if I have that written on paper (which is a good idea).

But how do I ask them politely and not sounding like I don?t trust them to make it in written?

Anyone has been through this too? Should I just trust them? (I have a text message, does it help?) or should I still ask them to give me something written?

Re: Work and time off - need help

  • Hello, and I'm sorry for your loss. We just had our on 7/6/09 and I was induced to have the natural delivery of the fetus on July 7th. My work immediately told me about Short Term Disability benefits. I have up to 5 weeks. I have to decide by Monday if I am going to go back to work or take more time off. Things are in writing. So, even if it's just Emails, I would get some things in writing. Are you supposed to be paid, or is it unpaid leave. I don't think it's rude to ask them. I think it's just protecting your job in this difficult time. I feel for you, and I will keep you in my prayers! Good luck!

  • I hope this helps. Do you have a HR Director you can talk to?

I work as an HR specialist. My boss is the HR manager. She called and said I could take a month. Then when I talked to DH and he told me about having it on written, I emailed her, thanking her for the month off I could get, but also telling her that I was afraid to lose my job. She email me back saying I have her word that I?m not going to lose my job. She just wants me to recuperate completely and come back to work when I?m ready.

You would think I know better about this kind of stuff, but right now my mind is somewhere else. Is this enough?

  • That is very nice of your work. The fact that your boss put it in an email you technically have it in writing. I would keep that email should you need it for future reference. Or just write back clarifying the dates and ask her to confirm. Email is a great tool for "getting it in writing." Good luck with everything and I am sorry for your loss.

  • Legally, a text or an email is legally binding.  If you don't get it in writting, keep the email.
