3rd Trimester

Slow Fe Question

I was recently put on Slow Fe for my low iron levels. Around 20-30 minutes after taking the pill, my heart started racing and I vomitted 3 times. Did anyone else experience this? I guess all I can do is eat red meats and green leafy veggies....

Re: Slow Fe Question

  • The only adverse effect I was told to look for was constipation, so I take a Colace every night before bed.

You should call and let your dr know that's how you reacted and see if they have any other course of treatment they can suggest. If your levels are already low, it will be hard to bring them up by diet alone.?

  • OMG...actually I get the same feeling, but never actually vomit...i think it is because I don't have enough food in my stomach when I take th pill...you should try taking it right after you eat and see if that helps!
  • You need to take it on a full stomach.  I made the mistake of not doing that and got really nausiated, started having hot flashes and then threw up.  Learned my lesson.

  • I was also told to take it with a source of Vitamin C (glass of orange juice or orange slices, etc) and NOT to take it at the same time as my PNV or a high-calcium meal because calcium will block the absorption of the iron.
  • Make sure take them with a glass of OJ and on a full stomach.  Also, take your SlowFe in the morning and PNV at night.  It will make you sick to yoru stomach if you take them together.
