Infertility

Could I get away with this... insurance question

My insurance - through H, provided by the Fed Govt - does not cover much of infertility treatment at all.... or maybe it does, but we do not live in a state where infertility is covered.

I might have the option at my job to go work on a project in Boston - where IF does have mandatory coverage - for a few months.  Were I to take that option, and go to a fertility clinic there, would my insurance then have to cover me?  If no, would the answer change if I were to change to the insurance provided by my private-sector employer (who provides zippo for IF)?

 TIA!

  • I think you'd have to find this out from your employer, but my gut tells me you would not be covered b/c even though the project is in Boston, your employment is through your current home state.  You could always call the insurance company directly and ask?

I would call your insurance company and ask so you would know for sure. But I dont think it would work. It is all about where your insurance company is based. If they are based in your home state, it wont matter that you are in Boston. You would have to have an insurance company plan out of MA for it to be covered. I live in MA, and have BCBS of MA, so treatments were covered. If I lived in MA and my insurance was based in another state, then they wouldnt have to pay for IF treatments. I hope that makes sense. Good luck and I hope I am wrong!!

  • Mr&MrsS - why the heck would I mind? :)  Thanks for the good wishes. Your boy's precious!
  • Given that your insurance is through your husband and the feds, your coverage would be unlikely to change, despite you working from a mandated state. ?Unfortunately, the federal government does not have to comply with the mandate. ?You may want to get your husband to look into all of the plans that are available to him during enrollment time. ?I also work for the feds, and there was an hmo plan available to me that has terrific coverage for IF (everything is covered, just pay office visit copay), kinda crappy for everything else though. ?So, I also have insurance through my husband which has no IF coverage but great coverage for everything else. Maybe you guys could do something similar- have your husband look into all plans avail through the feds and if there is one that has IF coverage take it and have secondary coverage through your employer? ?Sure, the monthly premiums are more OOP but, far less than having to pay for IF OOP. ?This might be a helpful website for fed health benefits?https://www.opm.gov/INSURE/HEALTH/INDEX.ASP click on plan info on the left and choose your state, you will be able to look at plans that may be avail to your husband
