Traveling with 2 yr old ?'s

We are going to the beach in two weeks and I need some advice on what travel gear is essential.  We are flying from DFW to North Carolina and DS has his own seat on the plane.  Therefore, we will be bringing his big ole Britax car seat.  I already bought the Gogo Kidz Travelmate to tote the car seat around the airport, but am thinking I need to bring a stroller too.  The pictures of the travelmate show a kiddo riding in the car seat while being pulled with travelmate, but I'm not too sure about this.  I think it would be best to have an umbrella stroller too.  Thoughts?

Re: Traveling with 2 yr old ?'s

  • I always take a small stroller when we travel but I know a lot of people perfer to use carriers (of course, they don't  have a 2 yr old!).

On a side note, I would check the width of your Britax and the width of the airline seats you have... the Britax may not fit.  You can get the airplane seat width from www.seatguru.com.  You can usually find the plane type when you are selecting your seats online (at least you can for AA). We have a smaller seat for MIL's car that we always take on the plane.  The last trip, we had the bulkhead seat and with the tray tables in the arm rest, the seat was VERY narrow and the small car seat barely fit.  There is no way our Britax would have fit. Of course, most seats, the armrest can go up and that will give you more room for the car seat (but less room for the person sitting next to it).

  • I just went on vacation and we took the carseat and no stroller. ?I do wish we had one of the roller things for the seat. ?If you have that I don't see a reason to bring the stroller unless you will need it for your destination.
  • Thanks girls!

pjoann- I really appreciate this info on the website to check if carseat will fit.  I am going to find out what type of plane we are on now (flying AA), so I can see what size carseat to bring.  My DH has a smaller carseat if we needed.

  • I love that website... when I used to fly every week for work, I had a cigarette lighter type plug for my laptop so I was always checking to see which seats had the outlet so I could watch a complete DVD (my poor laptop battery would give out after about 20 minutes if I was watching something!)
  • It is a GREAT website and again, thanks for sharing it!  I had not heard of it before, but have already bookmarked it for future reference.  And you are right, the Britax is too big for the MD80 we are flying on.  But we do have power for DS to watch DVD's!!
  • Which Britax do you have? We've flown many, many miles with our Roundabout on AA (mostly MD-80s and 737s), and have NEVER had an issue with it fitting into one of their seats.

We have a Boulevard in our other car and it doesn't seem any wider than the Roundabout.

Come to think of it, if you measure straight across the seat, it *may* be wider than the airplane seat. BUT the "base" part is high enough that the small part that is wider sits OVER the armrests. Does that make sense? The base itself is definitely narrow enough to fit into an MD-80 seat with room to spare.

We have a Travelmate too, and we don't bring a stroller. We usually put DD in the Ergo and use the carseat/Travelmate to wheel around our bags. But DD loves riding in the carseat/Travelmate, so we've wheeled her around in that too, when she insists. I wouldn't use it as a stroller full-time, but it works just fine in the airport. And it is sooooooooo nice not having to deal with constantly folding/unfolding a stroller as you move from the parking shuttle through security to the plane...
