Pregnant after a Loss

Will you or have you taken child birth classes

Are you planning on taking child birth class?

Have you taken them already?

What do you think of them?

I'm trying to figure out what classes to take my hospital offer so many.   I was thinking about taking the breast feeding and infant care class but, wan't sure about the child birth class.  Do you think it's necessary and if you took it do you think you go anything from it?

Re: Will you or have you taken child birth classes

  • After talking to my doc, I decided not to take a class.  I am not trying to got med-free, so I don't see all that much of a point.  My doc said that the nurses are great and it will just come as second nature.

I am, however, having a LC come in after the baby is born to help me with breastfeeding.

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

    Delaney: Born 10/15/09

    Gavin: Born 4/8/11

    Baby #3: due July 10, 2014

  • I'm getting an epi.  I am not taking a class.  I wanted to, but they are all booked up.  I'm just reading all I can now.

DH and I are taking the labor and childbirth class next Saturday, it's an all-day class that includes a tour of the birthing center. We've never done this before so I definitely wanted to take a class of some sort!

I don't think I'll take a breastfeeding class, though, since there will be lactation consultants on hand once the baby is here and I figure I can learn and ask questions then, plus I'll probably read a book about breastfeeding in the next couple of months.

  • We took the class with our first and wasn't very impressed.  The breathing exercises were OK but I was in so much pain that it didn't matter.  I couldn't even remember to breathe half the time, let alone breathe the way that they taught me.  Ended up with a c anyway.

  • DH and I are currently taking a Bradley class - which is definitely necessary for us because we're doing a natural birth.  We are getting a lot out of it.  Though Bradley wouldn't necessarily be a fit if you're not doing a natural birth, I would imagine a childbirth class would still be helpful to manage the pain of early labor.
  • I took the class with my DD, and the breathing techniques did help. The reason why I took the class was because my nasty OB at the time said to me " And you need to sign up for birthing classes cause I don't need you in there not knowing what you're doing!" She was the worst, that's why after my 6 week visit, I never saw her ever again.

  • When I was pregnant with my daughter I took a 5 week Childbirth Class, a breast feeding class, and an infant care class.

I though all of the classes were excellent.  I didn't take them at a hospital, though I took the classes at an independant place in nyc called Real Birth.  The childbirth class taught so much about unmedicated child birth, medicated birth, and c-sections.  They covered everything and afterwards I felt completely informed.  Although I had an epidural I was still in labor for 2 full days before I was admitted to the hospital.  The class really prepared me for labor and also I felt very informed about what the nurses and doctors were talking about and I think I could make better decisions about choices in labor.  My husband learned a lot, too so it was great having someone else who was informed and new what was going on.  The class also talked about post pardum care.

I thought the newborn care and breast feeding classes were also helpful, but not as necessary as the class I took at Real Birth.

  • We're doing an all day "soup to nuts" kind of class on Saturday.  We'll have a hospital tour some time next month or the month after.  I have taught meditation before so I am familiar with most breathing and relaxation techniques.  I've also seen A TON of childbirth videos on youTube before I got pg. This class will be more for DH I think.

  • I'm trying to decide which classes to take right now actually - I think I am going to do the weekend intensive one in 3rd tri as well as the pets&baby class and a BFing class.
  • Im taking a class meant for those who plan on having an epi. During the class they take you on a tour of the hospital as well as spend time on BFing.
