Eco-Friendly Family

So I've been researching CD's for a few weeks....(new here!)

am I crazy to think that I'll like prefolds and covers just as much as the more expensive AIO's?

I am trying to be very economical, so I'm afraid I'm talking myself into prefolds just because they're so much less expensive.  But I loved the green mountain diapers site, and they really seemed to be less work than I originally thought!

Do any of you prefer prefolds/covers to aio's?  If so, which covers are your favorites?  and what about fitted's?  Do they really work better than fastened prefolds?

Thanks in advance!  I've been lurking on this board for about 6 weeks and I'm really encouraged to go ahead with my EF plans!  So many people aren't supportive of it--luckily my mom cd'd and bf'd and made our baby food and she's totally on board and excited I want to do those things too!  Thanks so much ladies, can't wait to get to know you more!

  • We use the GMD prefolds and thirsties covers mostly and love it (I'm cheap too!). We use Bumgenius 3.0s at night, which we also love.

  • We mainly use prefolds even though we have about 6 BG3s in the drawer right next to them.  It is what we are used to and it works for us.  I will caution that the prefolds stopped working at night for us very early on (I want to say about 2 months old when Alyssa started sttn) so you may have to invest in another type of diaper anyway (although obviously a lot less than the ones for day use).
  • You know prefolds really aren't that hard to use and we still used them alot during the day when DD is awake. I will agree with previous posters that we can't do them overnight or for long naps, but we often will just trifold a prefold and slap a cover on.  It's just about as fast and easy as an AIO.  I would suggest fitteds for nighttime diapers. Since you'll have plenty of covers already for the prefolds.  I thought that one-sized pocket diapers would always work for us for night time, but recently she's become a heavy wetter and a one-size fitted with cover is the only way she makes it all night.

  • Great to hear you guys like them!  What are your favorite fitted's for night time?  I could just use these with the covers I use during the day, right?

    Thanks so much ladies!!!!

  • We love prefolds here and I never thought I would.  I did the trial through Jillian's Drawers and fully expected to only like the Bumgenuis pockets.  I found out though that the prefolds were easier than I thought!

Green Mountain Diapers is definitely the way to go in my opinion.  DS still fits in the red edged at 18 months - so over a year now!  We mostly use wool covers now, but we really liked the Imse Vimse covers.  I think the most important part of choosing a PUL cover, especially in the beginning, is to get one with gussets around the legs since that helps contain the poo.  We also use fitteds and like them but they can be a lot more expensive.  You might want to invest in some absorbent fitteds or maybe even a few pockets for nighttime.

     Good luck!
