Re: Thoughts?

  • I can't remember - do we have any teachers on this board?  I'm especially curious to hear their perspective.  My husband, sisters and many friends are so sent it to them as well.

  • I think its completely ridiculous.  In real life you will not get a 50% score for doing jack shiit.

  • i don't think i agree with that at all.

"Incoming freshman Emily Gray said she thinks the no-zero policy is a good idea because it will help students to pass their classes"

how about you pass your classes the old fashion way, by studying hard and putting in the work and earning a grade. i get the self-esteem issue, but all the more reason to have them earn their grades.

  • imagemandybr:
Combine that with the "everyone's a winner" mentality (because you know getting a zero hurts children's feelings as well as their ability to get passing grades, noshitsherlock- you don't do the work you get a zero not a 50%.  Was 50% of the work done?) and we are setting ourselves up for a continued future of self-important losers whining about how things have not gone their way.
    Yes yup.
  • I don't like it. While I agree that, when kids get really bad grades and see that it's going to take A LOT for them to make it up, they get discouraged and don't want to try, why not let them make up the work instead of just giving them a 50% for doing NOTHING. I remember the teachers used to do that in my school - you'd get an automatic %-off for it being late, but they would still give you an opportunity to do the work so you wouldn't have a zero bringing your grade into the gutter.

This. I think people feel way too entitled as it is.
  • after reading these replies, I'm not even clicking on that link til I'm home and can let out a scream of frustration b/c I guarantee that will be my sentiment

if you earn a zero, you should get a zero.  work harder or get over it.

  • It's actually scary that "smart" people are considering this when I think of all the ways it's whack. A zero is not a reflection of the student as a person, rather it's an objective scale of effort and comprehension. They'll always be standards of measurement, and the school board that does this is essentially lying to the student.

    Idiots. People are idiots.
