3rd Trimester

Internals

Okay I have always found myself to be a little skeptical/judgemental when people say that internals really, really hurt. After all, a lot of people say paps really hurt, and I've never even hardly FELT a pap.

Plus the internal I had at 36 weeks was exactly like a digital/manual exam and didn't hurt at all.

Holy hell. I was in a completely new ballpark today at my internal. Indifferent It hurt like a mother. I'm wondering if she stripped my membranes or something while she was at it. Apologies to all of you who have said they're painful!

Re: Internals

  • Everyone is a bit different for me. It's all about where baby is and how far dr has to reach to get to my cervix. The one I had yesterday wasn't as bad as the one before.

Also, I hope they didn't strip you without asking first. They should at least ask permission before they do that!

  • I had my first internal today & it didn't hurt at all while he was doing it.  I'm pretty sore/crampy now though!

  • Thanks for this post!

I havent had that yet and I don't come on here much so I had no idea to expect it to hurt. My first one is in just over a week. Thanks for the info!

  • I had my first one on Tuesday and I was expecting it to hurt from what I have heard/read on here and other people. Mine didn't hurt at all and I had a little cramping that day but nothing serious... I'm sure it will be different the next time (38 weeks)

  • I've had one so far and it didn't hurt at all.  I guess everyone is different!
  • I had my second one this morning and it wasn't bad at all. ?I'm having a c/s next Thursday so I don't think I'll have another internal. ?I guess I've gotten off easy (although the c/s recovery will be a different story)!

  • I had one at my 38w apt and it HUUURT! It makes me think that if a finger hurts like hell... I will probably die during childbirth, LOL!
  • I agree. Pelvic exams never bothered me, sure they were "uncomfortable"...but yesteday was my 3rd internal and has been done by 3 different OBs...PAINFUL...and yesterday, I think the OB tried to strip my membranes too...I got home and was bleeding...brownish..not heavy like a period so I didn't get too excited.  But have been having "slight" lower abd cramping since...so I am wondering if he helped me out a little. Plans for induction tomorrow...I am hoping I can go on my own before then.

I had my first yesterday and it didn't hurt at all.  She did say that the baby is very low though.
  • Now you are scaring me... I have the first internal in a week...

  • I was wondering the same thing about them stripping membranes without letting you know. With my first I had 2 internals, no big deal. 3rd, I was said "WHAT THE HELL?"

Glad to know it's possible other OBs do this.

Haha this is Exactly what i was thinking after my first internal!!

  • I had one last night and it didn't bother me at all.  I had very light cramping after but nothing too painful and it only lasted a few hours off and on.
