reflux/heartburn and sore throat?

Being pregnant is just not for me.   I am gross.  I get super snotty and the snot drains in my throat and makes me gag/cough, and sometimes puke and/or pee my pants.  Nice.  Well several weeks ago, I also got a cold on top of it and I was a mess.  Then the cold went away and I got a sore throat.  But I dont' feel sick at all.   I thought at first it was just from all of the coughing.  But then it got pretty bad and I went to the doctor and they did a culture and said it wasnt' anything like strep.   And then it got better.  now it's back.

So I'm wondering - would be be from reflux?  I've been taking Pepcid for heartburn, but not real religiously.   I know reflux can cause pain, but can it irritate your throat all the way up close to your mouth?  I feel like mine hurts in the back, just past my tonsils.  And sometiems it radiates into my ears.  It's a real "burny" pain too..  and it seems to come and go.

any ideas?

Re: reflux/heartburn and sore throat?

  • It COULD be reflux, but walking pneumonia and bronchitus are going around right now ( which bryn and i have ) heavy chest, burning inside, bodyaches and when i cough i wanna die.

And yes reflux definitely can go up to your throat, it sucks :( Hope you figure out what helps it!

  • I dont have a heavy chest, body aches or a bad cough.  The cough is more like if you breathe in water in the pool... it's just that I have to hack up snot.  It's a really shallow cough.

THat sucks that you guys are sick1

  • Jill, I had the same thing at the beginning of my PG. I got a really bad cold, thought it was bronchitis or strep and it wasn't any of those. It ended up being a sinus infection and a sore throat.

The sore throat got worse from all the acid I had, not to mention anytime I had to throw up, the acid was even worse. It eventually went away once the morning sickness stopped. Hang in there.

  • It could definitely be from reflux.  Reflux can cause a whole host of issues and if it is LPR instead of GERD it would be getting into the back of your oral cavity.  The pain to your ears could also possibly mean that you are getting mucus or acid into you eustachian tubes which, if it is happening, could possibly lead to a middle ear infection.  But throat pain and pain to your ears can sometimes be signs of other issues too.  I would bring it up with your doc and probably see if he/she thinks a visit to an ENT is warranted.  Also, bad coughing can cause your vocal folds to become irritated which can lead to more coughing, etc and could cause damage to the folds.  That's something you'd want to get checked out.But it could all just be a reult of irritation from the excessive mucus: https://www.pregnancy-info.net/rhinitis.html Make sure you are well hydrated to thin out the mucus secretions; that might help a little.  Can you take Mucinex (plain ole guaifenesinnot -D or -DM)?

    What is LPR?

I've been doing a Neti Pot and that has helped withthe mucus a lot.  I took Robitussin for a bit and that didnt' help.

I'll go look at that rhinitis link.  thanks.

  • LPR is laryngopharyngeal reflux, in which the acid is refluxing through your lower esophageal sphincter, up the esophagus, and all the way up through the upper esophageal sphincter into the back of the oral cavity.  GERD is only through the LES into the esophagus.  LPR can cause irritation of the vocal folds if the acid drips into the upper airway and could lead to chronic cough/throat clearing. Although LPR alone might not produce sore throat symptoms (it tends to be much smaller amounts of acid), LPR and GERD together probably would.

All of this info comes from a master's level course about voice and voice disorders, if you are wondering.  I'm not an expert by any means, but I pulled out the main points from my notes :)  Hope you feel better soon!

  • You got a lot better answer already, but here's my two cents... i saw the doctor for a cough that kept waking me up and night, and a feeling that my throat was always dry, no matter how much water i drank.  It turns out it is acid reflux.  Those were the only symptoms, though, no heartburn.  So, yes.  It could very well be acid reflux.
