Swim lesson logistics?

So today was our 2nd swim lesson. Ds seems to really like them!

Today was my 1st day alone (dh came to the first one) and changing was a mess. They have a "family changing area" but the only private rooms (for me) are small changing rooms with open outlets which it took ds about 3 seconds to discover. There are no changing tables, just benches in the main area.

So my question is what do you do about changing dc and yourself at swim lessons? Do you just go home in wet suits or do you try to change there? If you change at the pool, any advice for making it easier?

Re: Swim lesson logistics?

  • Our lessons start in a few weeks and I'm wondering how this will all work.  There are no family changing rooms at our pool.  I thought about just laying a towel down and putting her in a reg. diaper for the trip home.

  • Bring DH! haha!  That's really my only answer.  It would be absolutely impossible where we took lessons before. It was one big locker room and TONS of people. I barely had space to change let alone have DD stay somewhere while I did it.  With DH, I'd go in and change DD on the changing table and bring her out to DH (who changed while I changed her), and then I'd go in and change.  We took lessons over the winter so there was no way I'd go home in wet suits.

Oh, the first couple times I did attempt to do it all on my own.  One time a mom from our class offered to help hold DD while I finished changing.

  • I bring the stroller and snacks, and change ds first, sit him in the stroller with his snacks and then I change. That is the only way I can do it.

This. DH and I took DD to swim lessons when she was just 6 months old. We each tried once on our own and it was crazy. We were still using her infant carrier and could "lock her in" and she would try to wiggle out and such. It is just easier with another person. If you absolutely had to do it on your own. I would change your DC and then ride home wet.

  • PP's stroller idea is good if there is space. Where we had to change was far too small with way too many people.

This would be great if he didn't have to work...

I was actually contemplating bringing outlet covers so I could let ds down in the changing room, but I'm sure the next thing he would discover would be how to climb under the door.

I also thought about trading off with another mom there, but I'm not sure I could handle two one-year-olds on a wet floor!

  • We dry off really well with beach towels. I put DD's coverup on her and I put shorts and shirt over my bathing suit and we drive home in our suits. Granted it's only a 10 - 15 minute ride tops, but I didn't want to bother with changing there.  It's 90+ degrees here so it works for us.Then I change her and myself as soon as we get home.

  • The pool is walking distance for us, so we just walk home afterwards.  In the winter, I will probably change DS and drive home wet, then change at home.
  • Most of the time I tied a towel around me and went home in my bathing suit...b/c like you, the first time I did it alone, all they had was the group changing area...I would just go home in a towel and bathing suit, if I were you.
