I always associated it with "marches to the beat of her own drum." Not the same as everyone else. I've never associated it with anything negative. I think people say weird if they mean weird.
Or I'll always say, "We're not cut from the same cloth" meaning we're two totally different peeps. ?So, to me it means similar or different. ?Depending on the context it can mean unique.
