Austin Babies

Someone talk me down--freaking out/diabetes.

My child has no signs of diabetes.  She's not eating more, she's not drinking more (and takes in less liquids than I think she should, honestly), she's growing, gaining weight, etc.

I keep thinking, though, that she smells like she had too much beer and is working it out through her pores.  You know the smell, right?  The co-worker who comes in and you know they had a rough night, the smell of the guy next to you at the aftrnoon football game.

DH thinks I'm crazy, and smells nothing.  But I totally smell it.

Do I take her in to see the pedi?  What do I say?

I'm also really afraid it means my anxiety is coming back.  That in itself makes me want to cry.

  • Maybe you are knocked up and it's your super pregnant mommy sense of smell?  :)

If you think there's an issue, then by all means go to the doctor and tell them what you smell.  They've heard odder things than this.  They can either runs tests or reassure you or both.

  • She's not eating or drinking more.  She's growing and gaining weight.  There is no reason for you to worry!!!

When I get worked up about something I try to remember advice that a good family friend told me when my dad was dying and I was freaking out, her advice was that fear and anxiety does not come from God.  Anxiety keeps our minds unsettled and not focused.  That said, imaybe tomorrow morning call the ped and see if you can get her checked out.  It will make you feel better.  Just tell him/her what you told us and cross it off the list and move on.  I think everyone has these thoughts when they love someone so much!

  • I ate two fortune cookies tonight. Out of nine cookies on the table, I ended up with the same fortune in mine, and mine was the only repeat.  Maybe it was meant to be shared?  It was "Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood."

I totally read that as "I ate 9 fortune cookies," and thought, "Damn, I love fortune cookies, but I don't think I could eat 9." =)  2, though, I could totally do.

  • I know you struggle with anxiety (or have in the past.)  I am sure this is really hard.  If you are concerned, I would make an appointment with the pedi.  But it really doesn't sound like anything, especially if you DH hasn't noticed a strange smell.  It can't to just get her checked out.

Since you mentioned your anxiety seems to be increasing, perhaps you should also make an appointment with your doctor or counselor.  I am sorry you are dealing with this. Just remember - that you will be able to handle all things in life and that getting worried doesn't change the situation.  It only makes your life harder.  Take a deep breath.  Hugs!

  • I don't think you have anything to worry about.  I have a good friend whose 4 year old was diagnosed with JD earlier this spring, and he was most definitely showing signs that you say DD is not showing at all - excessive thirst, periods of listlessness, and very very frequent urination.  It was pretty clear to them that something was not right with his bodily functions.  Sounds like in your heart you know that your precious girl is fine! :)

I too have struggled with anxiety at different times in my life.  Interestingly enough mine manifests itself in medical concerns also...  I know how easy it is to really get stressed out and completely freaked about something being wrong with someone that you love so much.  I have no advice on that unfortunately but just wanted to say that I know how you feel.  HUGS!

  • DH called the pedi for me this morning, and explained what I'm worried about.  He said they were great about it.  We have an appointment later this morning.
  • Good luck!  Hope the appointment goes well.
