XP: Blood in stool, Dairy Free come in...

She was really fussy yesterday and just now I noticed a little bit of blood in her stool. I have been cutting out dairy (about1 month) but Monday I had some goldfish, big mistake. I also have been eating Tofutti ice cream (dairy free) but could Soy be bothering her as well? Any advice on hidden dairy in foods that I should watch out for.

TIA

  • Soy could definitely be the problem as well.  Here are some sites to help you with hidden ingredients:

    Good luck!

  • My son has been battling blood in his stool for 5 weeks now.  From the time they found blood in a test of his diaper (none visible), they told me to avoid both dairy and soy because most babies that are intolerant to dairy are also sensitive to soy.  Obviously this is totally hard to do, but I have been doing it strictly for 5 weeks...as long as I know what to avoid.  Some "hidden dairy items"...

anything that says "artificial or natural flavorings"

    brown sugar

those are two that I kept missing.

as for soy, it is in alot..and if your looking at labels, soybean oil and soy lecithin isn't considered "soy" protein.  Most kids are ok, but if your little one is extra sensitive, these might need to be avoided too!

My son has never had visible stool, but had mucousy stool alot with many positive blood test results.  Good Luck!

The figure I've heard it 20% of kids who are sensitive to dairy are also sensitive to soy.  So, not "most" but still a big percentage.

You could try cutting out the soy too for a few weeks and see if that helps, then re-introduce it and see what happens.

For a different ice cream alternative with no soy, I like coconut milk ice cream.  This blog post has a picture of what I'm talking about.

I've bought it at my local co-op grocery store.

The kellymom link that the pp mentioned has been helpful for me for finding hidden dairy.  i keep a copy in my wallet.
