I have been flirting with the idea of ferbering for a while then DD gets better, then worst. I read the book when she was 6 months old.
DD normally falls asleep in my arms drinking her last bottle of the day. I dont rock or anything special but to me this defeats the purpose of Ferbering but I dont know???? Any ideas? Do I just ferber over night?
Re: Yet another Ferber ???
If she's falling asleep easily in your arms and that's working for you guys, keep doing it!
I wonder the same thing for my ds.... he falls asleep nursing. the problem is the night wakings...so do we ferberize at the wakings or try to keep him awake to begin with?
ds is back and forth too... but the bad times are always for a reason. he has reflux and still has occasional issues with it...once he started to improve with that his sleep got better on its own. Now he's teething and it's killing us... so can't do ferber now either. sucks when they have legit reasons for being awake because no amount of sleep training will help. he always wakes up to eat bc with the reflux and now with the teething he doesn't eat much during the day.
grrr. so tired!
btw - my DD was always good w/ going to sleep, but started waking up TONS 4-5 times a night. My pediatrician suggested just letting her CIO for the middle of the night wake ups. Totally worked for us. . . and DH and I also decided the first time we did it that we would only do it for the first 6 hours she was asleep - we knew she there was no way she could be hungry that soon. The first night was hard (and she woke up 3 times - and cried a LOOONG time the first time) but by the 3rd night she was STTN.
That's been 2 months now - and she will sometimes get off track for a few days - if she has a little cold or something, but she's pretty consistent.
She started having problems occassionally going to sleep at night - and I will normally let her CIO then too, but she mostly goes to sleep drowsy but awake now - and did it on her own.
We started Ferber on Sunday night.
My 9 month DD always fell asleep while I was feeding her. Then I easily transferred her to her crib where she would wiggle around and get comfy with no complaints and then sleep 3-4 hours. Then she would wake up 1-3 times throughout the night and the only way I could get her back to sleep easily was to nurse her again - although she would pretty much fall back asleep the minute she latched on. Not really hungry.
The part about Ferber that I have learned was THE MOST IMPORTANT for my night waker was putting her in her crib awake when we put her down for the night. I didn't want to because I thought that part of our sleep plan was just fine, but that was key.
The first night she fussed <10 minutes when I put her in the crib awake and then was awake from about 1-2 am with me doing the check ins. Then she finally fell back asleep and slept until morning.
The last two nights AND NAPS, she has gone in her crib awake, put herself to sleep without a fuss and STTN (11-12 hours). It is bizarre how quickly it worked. The key was putting her in her crib the first time while she was awake. GL
