we are visiting at the end of July and the aquarium is 9 miles from our hotel.
It's worth going to, right? Also do you think it's best to just wear a backpack with our stuff and let DS walk around rather than bring the stroller in? I won't have my DH with me.
How long do you think it takes to get through the whole thing?
Re: The Dallas World Aquarium- visiting Dallas
I think I am in the minority, but I am not a huge fan. To me it isn't so much an aquarium as it is an indoor rainforest exhibit. There weren't a ton of fish to look at. It is a neat place, but not what I was expecting when I went and it was hot.
If you do go, leaving the stroller at the hotel might be best. It isn't really stroller friendly based on our trip. I can't remember how long it took us to go through it.

We went to the DWA recently and I honestly was not that impressed. They did not have touch and feel tanks for the Manta Rays, it was like one long line going in and out. I guess I expected more and we are big animal lovers so I thought I would see a lot more. We had to wait outside in the line to get in and the temp was easily 102.
I think we saw more birds than anything else.. we were in and out in a hour and a half. If you are looking for something to do, it is cool, but like I said we are big animal people so I was disappointed.
I thought it was just me!
The Aquarium is fun. Definitely worth going. As one poster said it's more of an indoor rain forest for the main part and then on the lower level it's the actual fish and sharks and stuff. Through out the rain forest part there are birds, monkeys, alligators, etc. I think your son would enjoy seeing all the different animals.
It is not stroller friendly. Bumpy and narrow passages, but we did take our stroller the frist time. You just can't get to a couple areas which have stairs and you have to wait for the elevator and stuff. A backpack is a good idea if you'll be walking through.
And yes, it is expensive, but depending on your son's age he could be free so you may only have to pay for yourself. But you do pay for parking. You pay at a little machine and put your receipt in your windsheild.
I personally think it would be worth the trip. It does tend to get warm, it is an indoor rainforest afterall. It probably won't take you more than an hour to two hours tops to make it through and really enjoy it. If you can hop on to their website to see what time the shark feeding is if that's something you're interested in seeing.
https://www.dwazoo.com/d/We're members, so we go all the time. Almost every weekend now that it's so hot outside.
Obviously, we enjoy it a lot. I do agree that it has fewer fish compared to, say, the Baltimore Aquarium, Monterey Bay Aquarium, etc. (if you've ever been to those). But it doesn't matter... DD loves to look at the animals just as much as the fish.
It is expensive, and I think the Fort Worth Zoo is a far better value -- it's much bigger and half the price. We're members at the zoo, too, and prefer that in the winter/fall/spring... but in the summer, the air-conditioned aquarium can't be beat!
We normally go on the weekends as soon as it opens, and it's a great time to go as there aren't many people there. It takes us around 1.5 to 2 hours to get through, and it's just starting to fill up as we're leaving. But we went last Friday (i.e. 4th of July weekend) at about 11 AM, and it was a madhouse! Never again. It took us well over 2 hours to get through, because everyone stopped to see the otters (which are right in the middle of the whole rainforest part) and so there was a huge slow-moving line of people backed up there.
We usually let DD walk. We went with friends last weekend and the stroller was a huge pain. I think it would be OK at the less-crowded times we normally go, but not ideal. There are quite a few steps and stuff, and while they do have elevators, it's more convenient to just be able to walk.
Have fun!
