2nd Trimester

Fun in the ER

Today a woman came in OBVIOUSLY pregnant and complaining of cramps.  When the nurse asked her how far along she was she said she wasn't pregnant.... but that she had gained some weight recently.  We ran a pregnancy test... guess what? Positive.  She sat in the waiting room and seemed perfectly fine and never even acted uncomfortable.  When the she got the the back the the doc checked her the baby was crowning!! The woman had to have been in denial... how can you look like that an not know that you're pregnant!  Also, she must have a really high pain tolerance.

And yesterday a woman came in claiming that she hadn't had sex in a long time and was on her period but she needed a pregnancy because she thought she was pregnant with Michael Jackson's baby.   She claimed that they had sex three times and she never "got checked for pregnancy" afterward.  Indifferent

How do you like working in the ER? I am starting in the ER in a week. I am kinda worried about being pregnant and having wild/flailing patients who might hit my tummy.

Well.. I was exposed to mumps and meningitis today... so it's not really my favorite place to be.

  • Better hold my opinion....don't want to be banned!

I can relate, I was exposed to an active TB patient two weeks after I found out I was pregnant. DH totally freaked out. Any advice?

Are you a nurse?  You can refuse to take those infectious patients while you're pregnant.  I'm an admitting clerk... so I just try to pay attention to the patient's complaint before I call them back to triage them.  If it's something I shouldn't be around I let someone else register them.  I never let them use my pen to sign their consents and, of course, practice good hand hygiene.

  • Jackson's baby? really? haha

I took a test after watching I Didn't Know I was Pregnant.  The only sypmtom I had was sore boobs and a little bloat (which I assumed was PMS).  I really didn't want to have a baby on a concrete, bathroom floor at a campground.  Serioulsy...Don't these women have a clue? My doctor said they all know but they're just in heavy denial. haha

There is really no way she COULDN'T have known unless maybe she thought she had some kind of stomach mass or something...

Yes, I am a nurse. I am going to be new to the floor and my boss doesn't know I am pregnant yet. This is going to be a fun adventure!
  • Holy, wow! Forget opening my own practice, I just need to recruit clients from the ER! Craziness!

My co-worker actually thought she had a stomach ulcer before she found out she was pregnant at 10 weeks!
