PSA for those of you with pets

So I'm sure you are all much more brilliant and have already thought of this, but it was something I totally forgot about.

If you have pets, be sure you have a neighbor, friend, or family member who has access to your house and can feed or watch the pets for you in case you go into labor and have to stay overnight while laboring.

Regardless you'll probably be in the hospital for 2ish days anyway and you may not want DH to be running back and forth between the house and the hospital even after you've delivered.

So be sure you have pet plans in place!

I totally forgot and we had a neighbor who was able to feed them, but one of the dogs didn't do well that one night without humans and had some anxiety. In retrospect, I would have worked out an agreement with our pet resort or a friend to have her watch them 24/7 on short notice while we were otherwise occupied. DH was able to go home after I'd delivered, but the during the labor process you obviously don't want him to leave!

  • We have our pet care lined up, but also be sure to buy extra food just in case you're running low when you go in!

  • Great advice! I am having a friend come and take care of our boxer while we are in the hospital.
  • OMG thanks for the reminder.  I will def put this on our list.
  • I actually did not think of this!! Luckily, we only have cats, so we just fill up two really big bowls with food and water and they could care less if we were here.

    Thanks!

  • Or dogs do really well when we are gone.  We have been able to leave them for four days with the guy nextdoor coming to feed them I'm so glad I don't have to think about taking them to someone on short notice.

Our dog will go to a friend's house while I'm in the hospital - he'll have a good time because loves their female rottweiler!  The cats will just feed themselves and be fine.

  • We have a self feeder and self water dish for the cats.  We've made arrangements with the boarding place.  My brother's in charge of taking the dog to the boarders.....we use the same one as him.  Good call though.  I bet a lot of people forget about that.  With so much going on.....it can get crazy!
  • One of the first things we did when we found out we were pregnant was to ask my mom if they could stay at our house with the pets while we are in the hospital.  Our backup plan is for them to go stay with my sister if something happens and my parents can't stay over.
